freeing usernames for usurpation[edit]

Hello! I'd like to make a clean start, but leave the username free for usurpation. I tried to make a username change, but was told that it was not clear if I meant to submit a vanish request, which is not my goal. How can I leave the username free for others without being asked to do so? Lutzoja (talk) 21:53, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

You can leave a message on your user page. In case of usurpation, renamers will take it into consideration. In case your current username will change, no one can create an account using this name unless they have admin access. —MdsShakil (talk) 05:52, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
A gentle renamer kindly replies by email:
It's a considerate thought but the system protects usernames which have previously been used as well as usernames which are currently in use. There is no way to free the name for others.
Thus, the strategy seems to be to clean up the orphaned userpage, add the label{{retired}}, and then something like the legend This Wikipedian's userpage is up for grabs/usurpation. Enjoy. Lutzoja (talk) 20:19, 12 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
