Hi there all. I would like temporary adminship here to be able to view and edit the Mediawiki pages necessary to be able to enable gadgets over on the Simple English Wiktionary. Since only administrators are able to edit the MediaWiki namespace, and I want to make sure that I enable them properly, I need to be a sysop for a brief period of time to be able to do so so that I can make sure to enable the gadgets correctly. I am not using this to get around the RfA system; I need technical access for a brief period of time to be able to enable gadgets correctly. Thanks, Razorflame 20:21, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Hello, the Simple English Wikipedia has plenty of crats and sysops, please ask there. MediaWiki-pages can be viewed by anyone btw., thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:24, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
You do not need to be an admin to copy gadgets over. Click on view source and copy the code over. This is a very clear attempt to get around the RFA system. A message at Simple talk on the project would have been polite and courteous to the very active community there. Majorly talk 20:25, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
This was not a clear attempt to get around the RfA system. If I were trying to get around the RfA system, I would have requested full adminship, not just temporary. Cheers, Razorflame 20:27, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Whatever this request is closed as Not done, please request temp-adminship locally, thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:28, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

  • The deletion was done because the history included personal information of one of the users , as he requested , I have restored it now , Please this nomination was for permanent position not for exxtension. --Ghaly 18:42, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

I agree with Kylu. Even tho the removal can't be done locally, it is better if the right is given locally whenever it is possible. Steward aren't supposed to give right if there's an active bureaucrat on the wiki.

Bureaucrat access

I've added the bot policy to the pages here. Waiting for a steward to assign the rights global bot to this wiki. Laaknor 10:18, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I added the wiki to the set this morning. Just forgot to mention it. Anyhow, 5 votes is really a borderline case. Let's see what other stewards think. --FiliP × 19:10, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
It is borderline. The wiki previously elected a crat with 6, apparently. I've sent a note to the mailing list to solicit more views. ++Lar: t/c 20:26, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm not in favorof granting, looking at the votes. One of the votes is the candidate himself, one is Jose77 with edits mainly in 2007, two are users with less then 10 edits from other projects (fr: and it:). So actually, I only count one really good vote. So, I'm sorry, but that pulls the case over the borderline I think. Effeietsanders 20:41, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
I agree with Effeietsanders conclusion, there seems to be one vote, that is not enough for bureaucrat, sorry, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:56, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
This is a really small wiki with less than 1000 articles. Please have a look at the active people on this wiki and you will see that we are... 3! We need highly the help of bots and someone to take care about them. However, last bureaucrat gave up and i didn't see any active steward on this wiki since a long time. If you think that you can take care and do a better job on this wiki than active people there, please do it. Guérin Nicolas (messages) 21:54, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Hello Guérin Nicolas, this is not about saying that someone would do a better job than You, it is just that there is no need for a local bureaucrat in such small communities, wo:Wikipedia:Bot and wo:Wikipedia:Yorkat are not spammed with backlogs. Stewards don't have to be active in the local community to help (and their actions won't be seen locally), the botrequests can be added to SRB and requests for permissions here.
Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 22:11, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Let me present you the things how it happened :
1) We saw that bot flag requests on the Bureaucrat's page were not satisfied anymore
2) So we decided to have a second bureaucrat because bot flag requests are existing on this wiki and still on demand.
3) I checked how many bots we have and i counted 35 (see here), this number justifies that some of them need to get a bot flags.
4) We decided to write a bot policy to allow global bot and to get a new bureaucrat to flag new bot. The idea behind is that this wiki is badly organised and that's maybe the reason why it doesn't attract people anymore.
5) We ran an election with the few people we have and try to get a maximum of vote. As i know there's no obligation for such votation on such wiki to exclude "old contributors" or "new contributors" (same as a votation on Commons), so the 4 votes are valid.
6) What you propose me in exchange is to check the Bureaucrat's page if there's a bot flag request, then if there's one request i have to go on SRB to make a new request, or to explain to people who want their bot flagged that they should go directly on SRB because we don't have bureaucrat anymore... This is really complicated in my oppinion and that's not helping us.
Please consider that there was an election and that this is election is over. I have impression really that we did this for nothing finally. How many votes do we need totally to have right to get a bureaucrat? Guérin Nicolas (messages) 23:04, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Can you ask the current 'crat to stand down, to clear the way for stewards to help you more easily? Because you have a very thin election turnout, and some of those folk are not huge contributors to your wiki. I'm inclined to think that it would be better to wait until your community grows further. I am sensing a potential consensus here among the stewards that this election is too small. ++Lar: t/c 23:14, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
The problem is that this community never grew since it exists, it was always less than 5 active people, some coming, some leaving. We try to attract more people by organizing better this wiki, and recently more people were interested to contribute on this wiki, that's why for the 'crat election you saw voters having few contributions. I can make that the election is opened for a longer time and ask 2/3 other active contributors to vote. For the current 'crat, i already left a message on his talk page for the election, i will try to contact him again but i cannot promise that he will answer. I understand what you mean, two bureaucrats are maybe to much for such a small wiki. But a biggest problem is too have no activ bureaucrat at all. Guérin Nicolas 12:07, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Guérin Nicolas and I talked a bit on IRC and I think the agreement was to wait a while for the local bureaucrats response, and to ask the users who requested bot-status on the local bureaucrats user-talk to come to SRB or the new local requestpage. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 21:49, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

So is this sorted and archivable then, or are we waiting further to see if the current local crat responds first? I wasn't completely clear but that's my guess... we're waiting ++Lar: t/c 16:47, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

I see no problem with leaving the request up here for another week while waiting for input from Guaka (or perhaps from Drini, who has been active on wo in the past). -- sj | help translate |+ 01:52, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello, four votes are too few imho, if there are many botflag-requests I'd recommend to implement the bot policy, other opinions welcome as always, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 16:48, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
  • Although the arz. wikipeida has many active users, and the nomination has been advertised since beginning, there was only those users who voted , The wikipedia has more than 1200 articles at the moment , and still expanding, there will be more issues needing a bureaucrat, especially appointing more sysops when needed, and other issues , that's why there was this nomination and it lasted for more than 10 weeks.--Ghaly 18:46, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
    • As said, imho 4 votes for cratship is a bit too few, and the project is not so big that it could not handle well without crats either, but I marked this for review for other stewards to comment, I have no problem if other stewards don't agree with my opinion and would agree to promote You, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:49, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Hm, I would say 10 weeks are much time to oppose for those who do not agree to having Ghaly as bureaucrat. Since noone opposed, I guess we can grant it. ~ --Thogo (talk) 20:53, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

I agree - enough time has been given to allow dissenters to voice their opinion. And there looks to be enough for a crat to do there given the number of successful admin noms. I recommend granting of Bureaucrat status to Ghaly per community consensus. --Daniel Mayer (mav) 22:23, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

If a local bureaucrat is active we will not grant the status from meta, please talk to him, remind him on his talkpage to have a look at the voting and to go to bn:special:userrights if he will grant the status, if he denies to grant You the status after a voting 3:1 that is his decision, if You think he abuses his position, You can open a discussion locally, so the community can review his actions or a RFC if the community is unable to solve the problem locally, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 08:17, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

How do I request Check User information on Hebrew Wiki? Deror avi 15:27, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Hebrew Wikipedia has own checkusers. You may ask one of these people: w:he:Special:Listusers/checkuser. --Thogo (talk) 15:35, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Three of the resigned. I was elected as a new one. so - how one is gets the authorisation?
So you are requesting Checkuser access, not Checkuser information, right? You need to identify to the foundation first. Send a copy of your passport to Cary Bass via mail or fax. But I don't quite understand that page. Why are there only Support sections? Where are the opposes and neutrals? --Thogo (talk) 17:14, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Already sent the email before writing the request here. There was one person in oposition. In order to win the election one must have at least 25 voters in support, and more than any oposing vote (and more than any other candidate). This time there are three positions to fill but only I got more than the minimum support required. reelections for the two other empty positions will take place in 29 days. Deror avi 21:40, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
WMF policy says: On any wiki, there must be at least two users with CheckUser status, or none at all. This is so that they can mutually control and confirm their actions. In the case where only one CheckUser is left on a wiki (when the only other one retires, or is removed), the community must appoint a new CheckUser immediately (so that the number of CheckUsers is at least two).. Thus, you are kindly requested to wait for at least another checkuser to be elected. Thank you. --M/ 21:44, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
On Hebrew wiki there should be always 5 - as 3 resigned, there are 2 (and with me 3). Deror avi 22:30, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
That's right, please wait until your ID is received and processed by WMF officers. --M/ 22:33, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
ID processed. Deror avi 08:24, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
The voting model you used is not something that we often see. When it comes to CheckUser voting, I think there should be separate candidates with possibility to vote for and against them. If the situation is like this one, where there are multiple candidates, then voting for more should be possible. As it stands, this voting doesn't indicate if anyone is against Deror avi, because people who would normally oppose have voted for someone else. Since userrights on Wikimedia projects shouldn't be assigned through competition, but through consensus, I strongly suggest to repeat the voting but in such a fashion where people can vote both for and against all of the candidates (or just the ones that still stand a chance -- you and מוטי). That way, we'd get a clearer picture. Don't get me wrong here, 25 support votes is great, but I don't see if there would be any oppose votes, because the voting procedure dilutes that. Thanks --FiliP × 08:39, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
This voting proceedure was decided by the Heberw wiki comunity and was votes in its paralment. Changing the voting system would require a change of the proceedures and a majority of 60% of the voters in the parlament ( which would take at least three month and probably would not pass) - all previous check users have been nominated the same way and in the past it proved no problem here (if it is a problem - then permissions to all current check users should be cancelled as well). Deror avi 12:41, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
anybody? Deror avi 07:25, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

I dont think you need to change the whole voting system.. Just have one vote with support and oppose... Abigor talk 08:34, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

That's changing the whole voting system - the whole poynt was not to votes in opposition of a certain person but rather chosing the person you want best (or opposing all). anyway - in all past nominations this was not deemed as a problem here (this is the 8th elections for check users done this way). Deror avi 09:32, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, OK. I'll tell you one thing: I wouldn't have granted those rights those past 8 times had it come to me. Since other stewards have granted such requests, other stewards can grant this one. Cheers --FiliP × 10:10, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Can you please point me to the Foundation requirements re the voting system with regards to appointment of check users, before I revert to Hebrew wiki and request that its voting system be changed. Deror avi 13:46, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
You don't have to change the voting system for the whole wiki. Just make an exception when it comes to CheckUser elections, since that's a right your community cannot technically grant (as opposed to sysops, bureaucrats). Checkuser policy#Access to CheckUser says The community must approve CheckUsers per consensus. [...] After gaining consensus (at least 70%-80%) in his local community, and with at least 25-30 editors' approval, the user should list himself under Steward requests/Permissions with a link to the page with the community's decision. That doesn't specifically discard your type of election, but it does require consensus and I don't consider what your community has been doing a consensus (note that there quite likely might be other stewards that don't have the same opinion as me). --FiliP × 14:04, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Our understanding of said requirements that for each check user - the votes in favour must be 70% more than the votes against (in my case - one against - in the opition of against all candidates) and at least 25 voters in suport. As there are three positions to fill, and as there are on 90 something eligable voters, it was not possible to fulfill all vacant position therefore realections is expeceded to commence within three weeks for the two other vacant postitions. Deror avi 14:22, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Not accurate, the official hebrew wikipedia policy says this:
It is written there that those who will be elected are those that their "number of supporters are double than the number of those who voted "against all candidates" option" so this is roughlt 66.66% and not 70%, even if we consider the "against all candidates" option as a legal one. The Relativity of The Truth
You might be interested in this. There's also a conversation regarding this matter between user:Uzi V. and user:MaxSem in MaxSem's deleted talk page here on meta. The Relativity of The Truth 00:24, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
In my book 25 against 1 is much more then 70% support. so the discussion above is irrelevant. The hebrew wiki is aware that for each candidate must have twice as much as the votes against him - so only in case there are 25 votes against and 50 in favour there is a problem. This is not the current case and a very unlikely hypotherical case. The Troll which replied above me is a known troll who nitpicks at unimportant matter in order to try and confuse simple matters in his favour (and in the current case he favoured another candidate). Deror avi 07:41, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
I think the problem is that people couldn't oppose. I am no steward but if people could vote oppose there maybe was a other result. Abigor talk 08:41, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
One can oppose - but it's oposition to all candidates. Hebrew wiki chose this system in perpose to show trust and to aviod politics - If u trust someone - vote for him. If one trust another - vote for the other - and if you trust none - vote against all. It's better then saying for someone that you dont trust him. By the way - almost all voters stated in there vote that they trust all candidates but as there is only one vote per person they had to chose one person over the others. Only one person voted against all candidates. Deror avi 08:45, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
But if there was only one vote per person isn't voting on the other perron the same as opposing? If some people trust the other person more than you otherwise the would have supported. I find it a very unclear voting system. Abigor talk 08:50, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
Many of the voters who supported the candidates said that they also support Deror, but they want more then one user to be elected as Checkuser. Also, the last 3 Checkuser's where elected by this method. I can't understand whats the problem here. If they got the CU rights, why Deror isn't? As far as I know, there wasn't any change in WMF policies about CU rights. Deror is a very good person and I feel ashamed to see him being dragged and treated this way. He deserves much better. Broccolitalk page 09:39, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

I am really disappointed by reading this discussion. The Hebrew Wikipedia, like any other Wikipedia, has its community, and is an autonomous one. The stewards are here to give services that where allocated to stewards, and to be outside managers of any Wikipedia. A refusal to fulfill a decision made by any Wikipedia should be made only in gross violation of WMF principles, and about such a minor bureaucratic manner like the case we are discussing here. The Hebrew Wikipedia has voted for Deror avi, and stewards should realize this decision. Recommendations for future changes in the operation of the Hebrew Wikipedia are welcome, but they are not relevant to the current vote. David Shay 11:22, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

25-30 pro votes in a community election held by community standards is certainly enough to provide consensus. While I can understand that the lack of votes stated against, it's clear to me from this election that the community is large enough to select a checkuser without games and has selected Deror avi through its consensus. I'll not be the one to flip the switch, but I will make an attempt to change the policy to cover situations such as these. bastique demandez! 17:25, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

  • Masry wikipedia is new and could be subject to vandalism as was obvious from the lengthy discussion about its creation on meta , the request is made here to get adminship so and vandalism will be dealt with , at the moment there is no sysops on the wikipedia and I was the test administrator , Ramsis and Mahmod are the user with the highest number of edits , Ramsis is the test administratoe for Masry wiktionary project.

I have announced the nomination on the wiki already and there was no deals made as none of the other two knew about it beforehand , I made this request to stop vandalism to the wikipedia. Ghaly 13:57, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

People do not need welcoming. Also, Meta has an active community that you should consider asking first, on Meta:Babel. Thanks, Majorly talk 17:31, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

No admin in this project. Currently I'm sysop in eu.wikipedia and till recently I've been temporary sysop of eu.wikibooks. We have had recent work and expect new pages in a short future and we need a temporary admin access. Thank you! Theklan 14:23, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I don't see any problem, only thing, please also open a local announcement that You are asking for adminrights, thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 14:53, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Done! -Theklan 19:48, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I would say lets wait two or three days to give users the opportunity to say something. In the meantime, I would like to invite You kindly to betawiki: (if You are not already active there), betawiki: is the place where all interface translations are done. If You are interested in helping out please follow the steps in betawiki:Translating:How_to_start.
Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:03, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Fine! I'm already a member of Betawiki... but thanks for the invite! -Theklan 23:52, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Kimkha has the support of basically the entire (logged-in) community at the Vietnamese Wikisource and has been active in establishing article guidelines for the project. Our only permanent sysop has been missing-in-action for over a year. Thank you. Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 07:18, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

By current standards, 3 votes are not enough for permanent sysop status. We'd be glad to grant temporary sysop status for say, 3 months, at first. --FiliP × 08:42, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

فیروز / Firuz @ mzn.wp

Currently on discussion, But Temporary access is neccessary (at least two monthes), One of the reasons is localization into his own dialect.
Thank you! Ali 15:44, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello Ali, please note that localizations of the interface should only be done at betawiki:, if someone wishes to help translating please register an account there and follow the steps in betawiki:Translating:How to start, many thanks, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 15:59, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
OK! I'll tell him about it, But admin's rights would be still neccessary (to better reviewing his actions). I continued this talk into your page. Thank you for your remind --Ali 16:41, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, yes, please tell him, it is really important to have the translations there, or they will never be available in other projects. If there had been lots of translations done locally already, they can be imported to betawiki and modified there, that can be arranged.
I would suggest a 3 months temporary sysop period on mzn.wiki to start then, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 21:10, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
So if import is possible, Why i didn't saw the current translations in betawiki? Or please import the current translated messages. Anyways, That would be really great for us if you grant 3 monthes adminship for him, We would appreciate it! --Ali 07:25, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
@Betawiki: They import only on request (of course because they can't know where to import from), please request this at betawiki:Import requests if there are many translations locally on mzn.wiki already, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 11:17, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Miscellaneous requests

Skjackey tse@zhWikibooks

Request for import permissions. Our community is very small, so only 2 support without opposition is available. Thank you!—『Skjackey tse』 06:45, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Helo, I noticed that in b:zh:Special:导入页面 no transwiki is set, but if You wish to import from a certain wiki that would be the prefered option. It can be activated in bugzilla and after that any sysop or users with transwiki-flag can import.
If You wish to import from an xml-file please note that this could mess up the wiki and might need the cleanup from an administrator afterwards. Therefore I would like to see if Shizhao, currently the only admin there, is in favor of this, he did not vote yet, thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:53, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
OK, but Shizhao is inactive @ zhwb.  On hold『Skjackey tse』 03:09, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
He is active elsewhere though; I have put a request for his input at User talk:Shizhao; you could even do the same at zhwikipedia if you want an answer quicker still. - Andre Engels 08:13, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
I know, thanks!—『Skjackey tse』 10:05, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Have you contacted the local community for input prior to your request? If not, you should do that first. Kylu 04:47, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi, that appears to be a public domain image created by the United States military. You can just use your single-user logon, hop over to Commons, and upload it there, so that it can be used on all the WMF projects. rootology (T) 04:51, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Ah, excellent. I was not aware that was possible. I'll use that method.

Hello Ghaly, here is the page where to import from: arz:special:import, You can choose in the drop down list, where to import from, sometimes if the source page has many revisions, You have to try to import it multiple times before it works. See also Help:Import. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 15:43, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Just imported a page as a test [16], works perfectly, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 15:46, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
