Global bot status for Wikisource-bot

  • Global user: Wikisource-bot (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
  • Discussion: Hi. Following a schema change, the Wikisources need to run a bot through and touch pages in the respective Page: nss (see phabricator task phab:T198470) and noting that the touching will lead to a light edit on some of these pages as it implements the change. There will be in the vicinity of several million pages to touch, so bot status is required to suitably grab larger slabs of pages, and also to allow a faster rate of processing. This bot running through will be only put through each language wikisource where that community has been unable to have a local bot operator undertake the task, or preferentially wishes for this bot to run the task.

Task: Run mw:Manual:Pywikibot/touch.py through ps:0, ps:1, ps:2, ps:3, ps:4 category-listed pages. Similarly task has been done previously following another schema change.

Note:

  • If you were able to provide bot access to just Wikisources that would be preferable, though I don't see such a configuration currently existing. You may think that such a design useful and build it though that is your decision, not ours.

ALSO please apply the right apihighlimits-requestor (as done previously) as some new WSes seem to have missed being part of Global bot wikis and these wikis will still need to be done, and these wikis don't have 'crats.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:47, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

  • It looks like the problems with causing "empty edits" is still being discussed at phab:T199042? I'm not a fan of pushing millions of edits through the front end if not necessary and see there is still some discussion on the first task listed. If this is the only way to fix the pages then I'm supportive of this being an exception to the global bot policy for a limited time and trust that the operator will stay on task. — xaosflux Talk 02:18, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
    • No. The T199042 task is about a change in the pywikibot itself. As the intended bot edits (initiated as nul-edits) are real edits that change database content (revision table, page_props table, and, in case of very old pages also page_text table) it is unlikely for this job to be done by software directly in the database. I have asked devs about such possibility (doing such jobs server-side) while deleteing a large category in Commons some time ago, but they suggested that such a solution is unlikely to be accepted. So, AFAIK, nobody considers this action as a server-side one now. Ankry (talk) 05:47, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

According to the rules of the Esperanto Wikipedia, a bureaucrat will execute such a request one week after community consensus. Community consensus has been reached weeks ago and an administrator has marked my request as executed, even though it still hasn't received a bot flag. I have followed all the formalities.
