About us

Youth Can Do I.T (YCDI) is a youth empowerment organization that uses technology and strengths based initiatives to develop and empower the youth. Founded in 2016 in Kingston, Jamaica by Lianne McNaughton YCDI was born out of the desire to use technology and self-actualization as the catalyst for capacity building among youth. YCDI seeks to equip the youth with the right skills and tools to turn their dreams into reality; changing their selfdoubt into unshakable confidence, belief in themselves and believe they can be creators.

in november 2023, we held a one-day 3D design workshop with participants from our Project Amplify program with Jesus College Oxford. The goal? Building on what they'd learned throughout the past months, we gave each a challenge to incorporate the Ethical Guidelines for the Metaverse into the 3D spaces they would design, using Mozilla Hubs. aged 10 (not pictured) to 15 years old, the students took the challenge and got to designing. By the end of the day, among the many things learned (some KPop fans), I had 3 major takeaways. ◇ Each student had a unique design choice, directly matching their personality. Whether it was the outdoor vs. closed indoors, all black vs. bright colored spaces or laid back vs. highly interactive. Each space was an extension of the student's personality ◇ Once they got the hang of how to add 3D models to their spaces from Sketchfab and publish their scenes, we were able to be mostly hands off, just troubleshooting and answering specific questions ◇ Of the many many items we had on our ethical guidelines document that the students could choose from to implement, 50% of them chose to focus on mental health -- Our responsibility at Youth Can Do I.T. is to help expand mindset first (the "I Can Do"), and then to equip them with the how to do it, whether coding websites, building games or 3D spaces. We were blessed by God to have had this opportunity. Special thanks to Gregory Moore of PlayJamaica for jumping on board for the mission and sharing his perfect fit space with us. Stay tuned for more.
