ICOMOS World Heritage Transhumance Initiative 🌿🐐 Defining a thematic approach towards sustaining transhumance cultural landscapes in a changing environment 🌱 The 20th century saw a decline in the #Transhumance lifestyle due to various factors, including economic factors as well as #ClimateChange, leading to the erosion of environment and built heritage, the disintegration of communities, and the deterioration of intangible cultural practices. 🤝 The project "Defining a thematic approach towards sustaining transhumance cultural landscapes in a changing environment" is led by ICOMOS in partnership with the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan . It aims to build a better understanding of transhumance as a sustainable socio-ecological system, improve the representation of transhumance-related heritage in the #WorldHeritage List and international programmes, and identify key management challenges for transhumance heritage. 💼 In 2025, an international conference on Transhumance Cultural Landscapes will be held in Azerbaijan to discuss the heritage values of the transhumance way of life and gather information on management policy approaches to the safeguarding and sustainability of transhumance practices. ℹ️ Read the press release: https://buff.ly/3VNIMrE

🏅 On May 6, Amund Sinding-Larsen was awarded the ICOMOS Gazzola Prize medal in a ceremony organised by #ICOMOS and hosted in his honour by the The Permanent Delegation of Norway to the OECD and UNESCO 💼 Amund Sinding-Larsen is considered a leading figure within the field of rights-based approaches in #culturalheritage and the integration of human dignity into heritage practices. Indeed, 4 decades of service and fieldwork in Africa, the Middle East and Asia made him want to contribute to the recognition of local communities in heritage resource processes, management and care. 📜 He played a key role in the launch of the Our Common Dignity initiative in 2007, which expanded in 2011 as a cooperation for the Advisory Bodies to the World Heritage Convention (ICCROM, ICOMOS, IUCN) under the coordination by ICOMOS Norway. An ICOMOS OCD-RBA working group was set up by the ICOMOS Board in 2011, consisting of members from ICOMOS Norway, India, South-Africa and Australia. 🙌 The 2020 ICOMOS General Assembly happened during the COVID pandemic, hence Amund Sinding-Larsen unable to receive the Gazzola medal. 4 years later, ICOMOS was happy to celebrate him with friends and colleagues and finally give him his long overdue prize. Congratulations to the laureate! 👏 ℹ️ More info: https://buff.ly/44YPNdp

🛑 Heritage Alert 🛑 📢ICOMOS is issuing a worldwide #HeritageAlert to amplify awareness of the threat to the #VingenRockArtArea in Norway 🚧👷 🏗 The Vingen rock art area in Bremanger, one of the most extensive and best-preserved concentrations of #rockart in Northern Europe, is under immediate threat due to a development project of a stone quarry at Aksla mountain, and in particular a new shipping port at Inste Bårdvikneset. 📝ICOMOS, ICOMOS Norway and the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Rock Art have written to the Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre, Stortinget and many other Norwegian government and municipality officials, as well as the developer BONTRUP, to urgently request the following: ▪️ The current approvals be withdrawn; ▪️ A thorough, independent evaluation of possible alternative quarry and shipping port locations be undertaken; ▪️ The stakeholders responsible for the assessment be provided with full information on the environmental and cultural values of the area. ❗ The Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage, the Norwegian Environment Agency, the County Governor of Vestland and the Ministry of Climate and Environment all formally opposed to the plans, but the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development approved the new quarry development in February 2024, stating the positive economic effects for the local community outweigh the negative effects for the natural and cultural environment. 🔗Read our statement and take action: https://buff.ly/3R2MwUC #heritageatrisk #SaveOurHeritage #culturalheritage #preservehistory #SaveVingen
