🚨Malawi is facing a severe food crisis due to an El Niño-induced dry spell, the worst in a century, affecting maize harvests. The government declared a disaster in March, projecting a 600,000 metric tons shortfall in maize production, crucial for 90% of farming households. With only a fifth of the $447 million appeal pledged, prioritizing interventions is vital. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) urges importing food is the only feasible solution to prevent widespread hunger. Long-term strategies to increase agricultural resilience are essential but won't avert the immediate crisis. Urgent donor support is critical to mitigate severe socioeconomic impacts. 📰CGIAR #IntheNews 🌍Alicudi’s feral goat population has surged, causing issues for locals and the island’s biodiversity. Experts like Mourad Rekik from ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas note that integrating feral goats into domestic flocks can be smooth, but capturing feral males poses risks. If capture efforts fail, authorities might resort to lethal measures, a controversial Plan B. Locals have already been managing the population by hunting, but the adopt-a-goat program aims to provide a humane solution, and debates on the best approach continue. 🔍Read more: https://lnkd.in/dHhyN5nJ Source: The New York Times #Biodiversity #FoodSecurity

Decision makers responsible for agrifood policy in developing countries face difficult choices every day. The Rural Investment and Policy Analysis (RIAPA) modeling system helps navigate these complexities by assessing the impacts and trade-offs of policies and investments on agrifood systems, workers, and households. This #webinar, co-organized by CGIAR's #ForesightInitiative and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) , will demonstrate how #RIAPA has been used to identify priority agricultural value chains that most effectively contribute to development outcomes.
