Hello,

As a Tor relay hoster myself I found out alot about Tor in last months, and would like to share my opinions and knowlage on my own Discord server. I would have a question on making my Discord server about Tor Relays. Can i make it and will it be copyrighted? I would also like to know if I can use the Tor logo for the Discord server logo? I searched and I couldn’t find any Discord server dedicated to it so I would like to make one for the community.

Anything you write in an article has an automatic copyright (for the words and sentences) but you cannot copyright knowledge otherwise some slick venture capital company would have copyrighted the alphabet and getting a cut of everything. Enforcing a copyright is your responsibility and thi$ mean$ cost$.

Anyone can take the knowledge gained from your site, digest it and put that knowledge into another article; just not the exact words although there is a “fair use” clause in every copyright legislation.

Ever heard of web scrapers?

Ever heard of Google? If that knowledge is worthy, G will serve it up on their results page so users will never have to read your article. Or sum it up with their AI. Same thing: no click.

Ever heard of Wikipedia? That knowledge will eventually end up there under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License 4.0. You will get a reference at the bottom of the page.

I’m not saying you should not go ahead.

I’m not very knowledgeable in the copyright industry, but The Tor Project already has a Matrix channel for it here

Yes, you can make the Discord server, but I do not know if you can claim copyright over it.

So it would be useless? Yeah i know there are alot of resources on this and didn’t think about it. Thanks for the info!

Can I use the word “Tor” as part of the name of my product or my domain name?

Please don’t use Tor in your product name or domain name. Instead, find a name that will accurately identify your products or services. Remember that our goal is to make sure that people aren’t confused about whether your product or project is made or endorsed by The Tor Project. Creating a new brand that incorporates the Tor brand is likely to lead to confusion, and commercial confusion is a sign of trademark infringement.
