Guide to cleanup of Biographies of Computer Scientists[edit]

Finding computer scientist to clean up:

MathGenealogy[edit]

If the person in question is on https://www.genealogy.math.ndsu.nodak.edu, make sure the link using Template:MathGenealogy.

Copy their thesis title and year into the infobox.

I like to put the link itself in a ref tag after their thesis title.

Genealogy[edit]

If advisor data is present, list in the infobox.

However, for advisees, only add them if they have their own wikipedia article. This is not the place for red links.

Make sure their advisor/advisees are added to the CS wikiproject so we can find them for cleanup if needed.

Awards[edit]

Awards can can be in a list or in prose and in their own section or paragraph or not. Just be consistent on a given page.

Unfortunately, award data can be a bit redundant. There are at least four places we should make sure data is present:

Thus, if a person wins an award, there are up to five tasks to be done:

  • Add the winner to the list of winners on the award article
  • Add the winner to the navbox
  • Add the award to the bio of the winner, linking to the award article
  • Add the navbox to the bio
  • Put the winner in the winner category

Here is an incomplete list of these awards, article, naboxes, and categories:

Categories[edit]

In addition to any award categories, there are some CS-related categories

Some of them are cross-products of larger categories; judgment call whether they are interesting enough to use.

Lists[edit]

Lots of lists we could add them to Category:Lists of computer scientists

Infoboxes[edit]

Make sure the page has a fairly complete Template:Infobox scientist or comparable.

Use Template:Plainlist and Template:nowrap as appropriate to get good formatting.

Make sure all awards and institutions listed in the article are present in the infobox.

Add important awards to infobox. I usually excluded fellowships, memberships, honorary degrees, and best paper awards from the infobox.

Make sure formatting is consistent (e.g. either all years and degrees for attended schools or none).

Talk Page[edit]

Add the bio to WikiProject Computer science.

If in need of an infobox, add |needs-infobox=y; if you added an infobox, remove it.

We could try to access quality and importance; I am not sure of the standards for either within WikiProject CS.

You can add a requested image tag, but for living people, actually finding one with appropriate copyright status is a challenge.
