Merger[edit]

According to Trapa, the genus comprises two species. According to water caltrop, "water caltrop" applies to the same two species. Should these two articles not perhaps be merged? --Stemonitis 17:12, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The water caltrop article is considerably more substantial than the trapa article, and more specific as well. I think that it would dilute the quality of the article to "up-merge" it into what is, at present, a very small stub article. I vote no. Waitak 22:09, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It does look as if the information on the two pages should be very similar, so I can understand the suggestion for a merger. If nothing can be said about the genus as a whole that cannot also be said on the more specific page, I would be inclined to simply merge the two - ensuring of course that none of the content from the walter caltrop page is lost because Waitak's observation about the difference in quality between the two is a valid point. I would then stick a redirect on whichever page is merged so that either name is still searchable. Silverthorn 12:28, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Merge in which direction.. the fruit into the genus, or vice-versa? I was gonna bulk up the water caltrop (aka "Ling nut") article 'cause of its coincidental likeness to my username... Ling.Nut 01:02, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As per WP plant standard; this would be Trapa, no? But it can of course be merged into water caltrop, and that, then, be request-moved to Trapa.
As the opportunity presents itself, the "chestnut" should be replaced by "caltrop" throughout except in the intro, because the water chestnut proper is Eleocharis dulcis. Water caltrop is the unambiguous vernacular term for Trapa. Dysmorodrepanis 23:15, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Strongly disagree with the direction of this merge, my view lines up well with that of Waitak above, if ever, the merge should be in the direction of the genus Trapa INTO the water caltrop article, and will survive thus as an introductory paragraph and taxonomic side-info
