MyLifeBits is a Microsoft Research project to create a "lifetime store of everything". It is the fulfillment of Vannevar Bush's 1945 Memex vision including full-text search, text and audio annotations, and hyperlinks. There are two parts to MyLifeBits: an experiment in lifetime storage, and a software research effort. The "experimental subject" of the project is computer scientist Gordon Bell. Dr. Jim Gemmell of Microsoft Research and Roger Lueder were the architects and creators of the system.

The idea stemmed from the fact that, although vast, our memory can be maddeningly elusive; examples are seen every day when we cannot remember what were even thinking of a few moments ago, or a past childhood friend.[citation needed]
