Secretary for Relations with States

He was appointed Secretary for Relations with States by Pope Benedict XVI on 15 September 2006. This office is generally seen as the Foreign Minister of the Holy See. He replaces Italian Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo, who was made president of the commission governing Vatican City State.

Michelle Bachelet, president of Chile visited the Holy See in 2007 and following her 40-minute audience with Pope Benedict she met with Archbishop Dominique Mamberti. "The cordial discussions provided an opportunity for an exchange of information and ideas on the sociopolitical situation of the country and its role in Latin America," the Vatican reported. "Themes of common interest were considered, such as human life and the family, education, human rights, justice and peace and other important questions on the international agenda. "Attention also turned to the positive contribution made by the Catholic Church to Chilean society, especially in the social and educational fields."[1]

Speaking to the UN General Assembly on 29 September 2010 Archbishop Mamberti praised the UN’s accomplishments - particularly in disarmament saying, “in spite of the imperfection of its structures and of its functioning.” Archbishop Mamberti also cited challenges to world peace, including “excessively onerous” military spending and the “problem of the exercise of the legitimate right of states to a peaceful development of nuclear energy, compatible with an effective international control of non-proliferation.” He continued saying, “Respect and the promotion of human rights are the final objective of dialogue and of international affairs and they are at the same time, the indispensable condition for a sincere and fruitful dialogue between nations … beginning with the right to life-- including of the weakest such as the sick in the terminal phase and children about to be born-- and to religious liberty,” he added.
