Citrio is a free, Google Chrome-based web browser developed by Catalina Group Ltd. Citrio is available for Windows and Mac OS X.[1] Citrio has number of its own multimedia-oriented features: a built-in download manager with a download accelerator, video downloader, a media player and a proxy switcher.[2][3][4] Citrio is based on the Chromium open source project which makes it compatible with all extensions, apps and themes from Chrome Web Store.[5]

Features

Citrio has a built-in download manager that allows to pause and resume downloads, sorts downloaded files by date, type and download status.[6] The browser has an inbuilt BitTorrent client which allows to download torrent files and magnet links without additional software.[7] Citrio’s video grabber makes it possible to download files from multiple online video websites.[8] Downloaded torrents and videos are displayed together with the other downloads in a respective section in the browser.[9] A built-in media player can play video files while their download is still in progress.[10] Further updates have changed the user interface of the media player and added the playlists option for audio and video files.[11] Citrio has a built-in ad blocking extension.[12]

History and Development

Citrio browser is developed by Catalina Group, a software development company which is also responsible for B1 Free Archiver for desktop operating systems and B1 Archiver for Android.[13] Citrio was initially released in 2013[14] with a number of its core features, such as the download manager, torrent manager, video downloader and proxy switcher. Catalina group has proceeded to a more active development of Citrio within a year with the introduction of new features and updates:

  • 38.0.2125.244 - social sharing extension added; redesigned download manager page.[15]
  • 39.0.2171.248 - option to edit torrents after the download has been started; free Premium account on file hosting servise 4shared.[16]
  • 41.0.2272.254 - media player introduced that enabled to watch videos in the process of the download.[17]
  • 42.0.2311.258 - added audio extractor option for converting video to mp3.[18]
  • 44.0.2403.264 - playlists supports has been added to the media player for video and audio files.[19]
  • 44.0.2403.265 - ad blocking extension has been added.[20]

Reception

Citrio has been mostly regarded by press for its downloading capabilities, such as the download manager, torrent and video downloader, with the main point for criticism being the absence of a unique design. In one of its first reviews, The Windows Club concluded that “...this browser could be great alternative if you're looking for a smart downloading browser.”[21]

Heavy.com has listed Citrio as one of the means of increasing the download speed and generally praised the download manager for its functionality: “It is a good solution to speed up the downloads and resume interrupted downloads.”[22]

In December 2015, CNET has reviewed Citrio with the following conclusion: “...if you download a lot of media files from the Internet, you should definitely give Citrio a try. It offers one of the easiest ways we've seen to download files...”[23].

On September 2015 Smashing Magazine has also regarded the download manager of Citrio, while also mentioning a faster Chromium update cycle in Citrio compared to other Chromium-based browsers.[24]
