The demon reaching the top is a wonderful sequence. despite the inherent beauty of a gorgeous blue sky, it's a sequence filled with horror. this is a horrific loss. the contrast between the beauty of it and the meaning only enhances its prettiness.

to add, a lot of its impact also comes from its subversion--you get a piece of media where the main characters spend prolonged amounts of time underground, dependent on torch light and magic for visibility, relying on their own routine and judgment to maintain their circadian rhythms, breathing stale, faint air, fighting for their lives at every turn, with nothing overhead but stone--false skies if you're lucky, the ceiling of a cavern so high it disappears into darkness if you're not. so with all of that, you expect the ascent, the return to the surface, to real sunlight and a real breeze and a real, endless sky, to be a moment of triumph and relief. to be a homecoming. and it's just not.
