OFCCP and EEOC Host Third HIRE Initiative Roundtable
Skills Based Hiring: Removing Barriers and Paving Pathways to an Inclusive Workforce
On June 28, 2022, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) and U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) will host, as part of the Hiring Initiative to Reimagine Equity (HIRE), the virtual roundtable, Skills Based Hiring: Removing Barriers and Paving Pathways to an Inclusive Workforce, to explore how skills-based hiring can promote equal employment opportunity in the workplace.
The skills-based hiring approach focuses on practical skills and performance, rather than degree requirements or formal qualifications. As the U.S. Office of Personnel Management recently observed, “[s]kills-based hiring helps hiring managers focus on what candidates know how to do, not where they learned it. It values all relevant skills for the role at hand, whether they are learned in the classroom, on the job, or on one’s own.”
Despite the strong demand for workers, many qualified job seekers from underrepresented communities face challenges in accessing good jobs. This roundtable will explore how employers have integrated skills-based hiring into their employment practices and how they have used it to identify talented workers from diverse backgrounds. In addition, the roundtable will delve into the practical and legal questions that arise when adopting a skills-based hiring approach.
HIRE is a multi-year joint initiative that will engage a broad array of stakeholders to expand access to good jobs for workers from underrepresented communities and help address key hiring and recruiting challenges. The HIRE fact sheet contains more information.
