Waste to Resource Ontario (W2RO) was founded in 1977 and represents, over 240 independent companies, municipalities and organizations in the waste, recycling and resource recovery sectors. W2RO Private Sector members offer a broad range of services including waste collection and transport, processing, recycling, secondary market development and waste minimization counseling. These members operate landfills, transfer stations, material recovery and energy-from-waste facilities. W2RO Associate members include consultants, legal firms and equipment manufacturers and suppliers who offer a wide range of talent, expertise and machinery to improve waste management practices. W2RO Public Sector members include municipalities, counties, regions and public services, that provide for waste management services to residents and whom offer enhanced government advocacy capacity and recognition for all waste management stakeholders.

This survey aims to establish an annual baseline for our industry's involvement in battery usage, collection, and management practices. Today, W2RO took part in Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority Annual Public Meeting. The 2024 APM brings together leaders from the producer community, industry associations, municipal sector, and waste management services and provide an overview of RPRA’s achievements, insights into the regulator’s operations from 2023 and look forward to seeing comprehensive enforcement in 2024.

Wes Muir is Manager of Business Development for Veolia North America (Canada) and is responsible for the strategic growth of the company's anaerobic digestion business. He has over 20 years experience in the private waste services sector with an extensive background and expertise in collection, transfer, diversion and recycling, organics management, landfill development and expansion, waste to energy and emerging technologies throughout Canada and the US. Wes has also advised municipal and provincial governments across Canada on waste management policy and regulations. He currently serves as co-chair of the IC&I Waste Diversion Committee with W2RO.

Yesterday, GHD moderated a CWRC Plenary Session on “The Future of Energy”. Deep appreciation to Katherine Sparkes (Enwave Energy Corporation), Gordon Lau (Enbridge), Takayuki Yamaguchi (Marubeni Corporation) , and Jonathan Scratch (Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)) for the enlightening session. Special thanks to Tej Gidda for moderating this dynamic discussion. To begin the session, Katrina McCullough provided an overview of “The Role of Waste In the Energy Transition” workshop hosted by W2RO and GHD in April. The workshop was designed to bring together representatives from municipal governments, the provincial government, Indigenous communities and the waste management and energy sectors to chart a new course for the waste sector. One that changes how we think about waste and how it can contribute to the energy transition.
