Since our very first day in 1997, our purpose has been to enable our customers to feel and look their best by offering them the world’s best line-up of beauty and skin-care brands (+ more), coupled with exceptional service. Fast forward to today, and we have over 5,000 MECCA team members across 100+ retail stores throughout Australia and New Zealand, a rapidly growing online business, two Distribution Centres, and a bustling Support Centre in the heart of Melbourne working to deliver on our purpose every single day. Our ongoing growth is fuelled by opening new stores and reaching new customers, launching new products, and harnessing the latest technology to constantly innovate and evolve our concepts, experiences, and service offerings. Not only do we work with over 150 of the best global beauty brands, we also develop, produce and distribute MECCA’s very own signature line of products. From supply chain to digital design, from software development to strategy, and everything in between, we are looking for diverse people from all backgrounds to continually challenge our way of thinking.     On this week’s episode of The Nordy Pod, our host Pete Nordstrom talks to Jo Horgan, founder and co-CEO of MECCA Brands, Australia’s premier beauty retailer. When Jo first started her business in 1997, she had a dream of disrupting the beauty industry by giving more control back to the customer and catering to their wants and needs. MECCA started out as a 900-square-foot store that did just that — it offered customers high-touch service and highly coveted brands that hadn’t yet been introduced in Australia. Fast forward to today, and under Jo’s leadership, MECCA now has 110 locations across Australia and New Zealand that each offer a unique and thoughtful experience to customers. They carry 150 exclusive brands and serve four million customers annually, and they continue to grow exponentially. Jo tells Pete about the many ways they’ve achieved their success and insights that we can take away for our own business.     Last week, we launched MECCA’s Leadership Program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business in Palo Alto, California, with 40 of our leaders living on campus and learning from world-leading thinkers on topics like leadership, strategy, artificial intelligence (AI), scaling businesses, design thinking, value chain planning, storytelling, stress management and longevity. They even learnt from NASCAR experts about the power of teamwork (… and how to change a tyre in less than 30 seconds).     Stanford’s motto is: “Change Lives. Change Organisations. Change the World,” and it delivered. Our leaders approached the week with a love of learning, curiosity, and a sense of adventure, and left with full minds and deeper connections.    We’re big believers in the power of education, and MECCA’s long-term partnership with Stanford will provide our senior leaders with life-changing experiences, which will help us have a greater positive impact on our team members, our customers, our brands, and the broader MECCA community.    Congratulations to the MECCA x Stanford Class of 2024!    📸 Josh Edelson Photography

    It’s here! The Stan. Original Documentary Trailblazers is now streaming, exclusively on Stan. Supported by MECCA’s social change initiative, M-POWER, the film tells the inspiring story of Australia’s much-loved national women’s football team, the Matildas, and their fight for equality. The story of the rise of women's football is symbolic of the progress that's been made towards gender equality more broadly. And the Matildas’ courage to stand up for their worth and challenge the status quo aligns with MECCA's history as a disruptor, and M-POWER’s mission to pave the way for future generations of women and girls to be their best.   Through this film, we aim to progress equality in sport (and beyond) through an impact campaign that will share the powerful messages of the film with schools, businesses and sports clubs around Australia.   Our stores are getting behind the campaign too!     Last week we welcomed Go-To Skincare Pty Ltd Founder and Queen of Peach, Zoë Foster Blake, to the MECCA Support Centre for a Lunch & Learn session.   It was a full house of eager MECCA team members, who were able to gain insight into what happens behind the scenes at Go-To, plus some valuable information on their newest launch, Very Amazing Retinal. Questions were answered, sandwiches were enjoyed and many a laugh was shared between Zoë and the wider MECCA team. A big thank you to Zoë for her time and the perfectly peachy Go-To caps we’ve been sporting ever since! #MECCAmoment

    To get our teams involved and thinking creatively about sustainability, we held our first MECCA M-PACT Mingle at our Support Centre last week. At its heart was a MECCA-first clothing and accessories market, giving pieces a second life and, most importantly, reducing waste.    The results? Our team members contributed more than 450 pre-loved items and donated $15,000 to our MECCA M-POWER partners. Sustainability was woven through every aspect of the evening; any clothing that didn't find a new home on the night was donated to Fitted for Work or recycled through Shred X, the flower arrangements were given to a local hospital, and food was enjoyed by our Customer Care team working the evening shift.   We’re big believers that change starts with us, and we can’t wait to share more about what our MECCA M-PACT team have been working on.

    MECCA M-POWER, MECCA's movement for social change, is so honoured and excited to have received the Eve Mahlab AO Gender-wise Philanthropy Award at last night's Philanthropy Australia Awards. Thank you to Philanthropy Australia for this recognition and to the other two finalists, 100 Women and Susan Alberti AC, for the work they are doing to achieve equality. MECCA has always been about creating an environment in which women can thrive, so it’s a real honour to receive an award named after Eve Mahlab, who did so much to bring the needs of women to the forefront of philanthropy. More than anything, this award is a fabulous opportunity to celebrate our extraordinary M-POWERed Collective of more than 20 social changemakers who are working to dismantle the systems and structures that hold back women and girls, and make the world a more equal place.    While we are just getting started and have so much more to do, it is really heartening to see the incredible momentum inside our business and the way our customers and communities are signing up to be part of the M-POWER movement.     Yesterday, MECCA M-POWER had the incredible privilege of hosting Julia Gillard, CAMFED - Campaign for Female Education Patron and former Prime Minister of Australia, along with two CAMFED alumni, Yvonne Chari from Zimbabwe and Abigail Kaindu from Zambia, here at our MECCA Support Centre.    Yvonne and Abigail are here in Australia to spread awareness about the phenomenal work MECCA M-POWER partner, CAMFED, does supporting girls in Africa to go to school, helping them to learn, thrive and become leaders in their communities! They shared their personal stories with us, demonstrating not only how education can transform lives, but the multiplier effect girls’ education can have on accelerating gender equality and building stronger, more sustainable communities. In Julia Gillard's words: “This approach is not about rescuing girls; it's about unlocking the power of girls and women to lead change for their families and communities.     MECCA M-POWER is thrilled to announce its support for the Stan. Original Documentary Trailblazers, a film that tells the incredible story of the fight for equality by the #Matildas, Australia’s national women’s football team. ⚽️   Produced by Savage Films, Australia, Milestone Films - Inspired Storytelling and LM Films, the documentary will be backed by MECCA M-POWER with an impact and education campaign. Created by Documentary Australia, it will aim to spark important conversations about gender equality in sport across classrooms, boardrooms and community clubs around Australia.   Trailblazers will premiere exclusively on Stan later this year (stay tuned!).
