About us

Aesop was established in Melbourne in 1987. Our objective has always been to formulate skin, body and hair care products of the finest quality, as well as fragrance and accessories for the self and home. All Aesop products are vegan. We do not test on animals and only use ingredients with a proven record of safety, efficacy and sustainability. We are on a journey to reduce our footprint on the planet that generously sustains us. So far, our progress has led to Aesop becoming a certified B Corp™. Alongside our commercial activities, we explore and support the arts as an avenue through which to inspire, learn and communicate. We are headquartered across two locations—Melbourne and London—with satellite offices and stores in many parts of the world, including New York, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Aesop has carefully cultivated a work environment in which our employees are constantly challenged to do their best. Our company is determinedly creative, intelligent and progressive, and nurtures these qualities by employing people who share our passionate interest in design, innovation, and incisive enquiry across all fields. Just as the ingredients in our products are carefully selected for their unique characteristics, so too are the individuals who work with us around the world – we value working with those who can bring a wealth of life experience and inspired ideas to our table.

In good hands. A fresh chapter for a time-honoured range arrives with new Eleos Aromatique Hand Balm, along with positive changes to the materiality of all our 75mL hand balm tubes. Formulated with a nurturing combination of hydrating humectants, alongside emollient butters and oils, Eleos Aromatique Hand Balm leaves even dry or weather-weary skin thoroughly replenished, warmly scented and a with a soft, matte finish. This distinctly hydrating addition joins Resurrection and Reverence Hand Balms, all of which are now available in 100% recycled aluminium tubes. Not only does this material make use of post-consumer and post-industrial materials, its production also reduces the greenhouse gas emissions associated with each 75mL tube by 12%. These balms are also available in a 500mL pump bottle format—as with many other hand and body care formulations—which are made from 97% recycled PET plastic. In keeping with our status as a B Corp™, this shift is just one of the ways in which we are progressing toward our sustainability commitments, which include a mission to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions.

A new space, steeped in history. Our first store in Beijing, Aesop WF CENTRAL House 19, was designed in collaboration with local studio atelier suasua. Situated in the storied Wangfujing area, it is housed within a siheyuan—a traditional courtyard residence. Silk flutters overhead in the serene outside space, while the interior is distinguished by high ceilings and wooden rafters, with formulations arranged on large teak structures inspired by classic step-beds from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Aesop & OTHER MATTER: an alchemy of algae. Ahead of Melbourne Design Week, the windows of 38 Aesop stores in Australia and New Zealand have been transformed in collaboration with OTHER MATTER—an experimental studio founded by Jessie French that explores the possibilities of a post-petrochemical world. The installations are created with a unique algae-based bioplastic of French’s own design which forms textural decals that can be repurposed and reused. Discover More: https://lnkd.in/e3RCKP2G

Aesop Beverly Drive: shadows, camera, action. Taking a subtly cinematic approach, our most recent Los Angeles store evokes a pared-back soundstage from a bygone era. A pair of alabaster structures stand off-axis along the depth of the space, pierced by strategically placed slits and windows that allow light in, casting dramatic shadows. Towards the back, a dressing room of sorts features a double en suite basin for private skin care consultations. Architecture by Aesop's in-house design team.

Form follows formulation: in partnership with Salone del Mobile.Milano. Ahead of its official opening, our newest Milan store, located just steps from Piazza Cordusio, was transformed into a sensorial showpiece by Nicolas Schuybroek. The structure—which took its very form from regimented rows of Aesop product—welcomed visitors of the city’s fabled design exhibition from April 16 until April 21. Aesop’s Creative Director Aï Kato says of the project: ‘Form follows formulation is a holistic expression of Aesop. It brings together our reverence for design with our desire to elevate mundane acts such as hand washing or moisturising into something exceptional, and even fun. Most importantly it is a celebration of what has sustained and inspired us for thirty-eight years: our product.’ As ever, materials will be thoughtfully repurposed for future installations. With generous measures of vitamins, the products in the Skin Care+ range replenish and nourish the skin. The latest addition to the range, Immaculate Facial Tonic redefines what a toner can do, by providing multiple benefits in a single step. Samy Hamada, Aesop’s Research and Development Director, sums up its purpose: “to offer lightweight vitamin-enhanced hydration and gentle exfoliation,” softening and evening the appearance of the skin over time. Rich in Provitamin B5 and Vitamin B3, it helps balance and refine, while the inclusion of Mucor Miehei Extract adds mild chemical exfoliation, gentle enough for daily use. In an interview with the Financial Times’ HTSI magazine, our Chief Customer Officer Suzanne Santos offers a glimpse inside her Melbourne home. In addition to discussing Aesop’s considered take on store design and unique approach to hosting customers, she describes how those incrementally developed over time. ‘Nothing about ourselves is contrived. It’s like sediment, it’s just layers of life built into behaviours that became part of what is now.’ Read the full article on the Financial Times’ website: https://on.ft.com/48BwHLe

Of courtesy and curiosity. In our stores, the utmost respect is given to any visitor’s entitlement to browse, linger, and ask as many questions as they wish. Our consultants are simply there to listen, explain and demonstrate, guiding them toward the products best suited to their individual needs. Customers are, in effect, guests in our professional home, and the same courtesies—and cups of tea—are extended to them as would be to friends and family in our domestic quarters.
