CONGRATULATIONS COLUMBIA FANS!

You decide to storm the stadium without a ticket causing an hour plus delay for kickoff. As a result the police had to escort all of you trespassers out of the stadium. And on top of that the Football gods punish you by losing to Argentina 1-0! Good riddance!

Btw FIFA you still think the US can handle the World Cup in 2026? This is going to the shitshow of the decade!

The Hater's Guide to Copa American 2024: Debriefing

Well, US Soccer fans, we did it. We actually peer-pressured the federation into sacking Gregg. I too was hoping for Jurgen Klopp to take the job, but we all knew that was nothing more than a pipe dream. Oh, you're telling me there was a whole ass competition still to watch? I'm going to level with you here, I didn't pay as close attention to Copa after the U.S. got bounced and with the Euros going on simultaneously, it was not easy to juggle it all. I know there were a ton of issues: shit pitch conditions, ticketing problems, and the unrest that followed in Miami before the final. It's over now, and hopefully this wasn't what 2026 will be like.

Brazil: Let's start with a heater, because my god, they definitely want heads to roll in the streets of Rio and Sao Paulo...or so I assume given the standard the fans hold the Brazil team to. The legends of the beautiful game had been saying that this was the worst Brazilian team in YEARS. The haters said they couldn't do it, and the haters were right. Uruguay is probably as talented, but they live in the shadow of Brazil and Argentina normally. Not this time. And you could argue it was partially on the Brazilian team setup. They relied so much on Vinicius Jr to make some magic happen and he didn't do that enough. Rodrygo was anonymous the whole tournament. Without Neymar, the creativity lied with Lucas Paqueta, Andreas Pereira, and Bruno G. A three-headed dog that was not Neymar, and left the rest of the backline exposed. We could tell there were going to be problems after drawing the US two days before the first group match. Then only drawing Colombia to qualify for the knockouts showed the problems were still present. Dorival Junior surely has so more tinkering to do, IF he has a job next cycle. He probably will, but you can never underestimate the chaos of football.

Panama: Congratulations, Panama! You get the award of CONCACAF overachievers. And a massive thank you from us US fans for helping get Osama Bin Berhalter sacked. But come on, did you really think the party would last all tournament? 5-0 to Colombia. That's what happens you play a real team. Take pride in making it here over teams like the U.S. and Mexico. A solid foundation to build on for the September cycle. Your World Cup qualification path starts now.

Ecuador: You really have to give Ecuador a ton of credit. Up against the defending Copa and World Cup champions with a stacked roster like that, going out on penalties is incredibly commendable. Moises Caicedo had a strong tournament and that will surely excite the Chelsea brass. Jeremy Sarmiento showed us a preview of what he will bring to the Prem with Ipswich Town. Enner Valencia went full chaos mode per usual. Kevin Rodriguez scoring that last-minute goal for the tie will be something he tells his grandkids about. Unfortunately, Argentina have a literal god of the sport on their team and the rest of the gods would not see their own kind taken down by a regional rival. Dust if off and go again, boys. You've got a World Cup to qualify for.

Venezuela: Another round of applause for Venezuela proving they're not to shabby at this footballing thing. Making the quarterfinals may not seem like much, but taking a Canadian team with this much European-based talent is very interesting. I didn't watch this team as closely as maybe I should have, but from what I saw, team unity was their X-Factor. That and veteran striker leadership in Salomon Rondon. I think we might be seeing some kind of rejuvenation with this team. They're loading up with top MLS talent, and that can go a long way these days.

Uruguay: Listen, we all would've loved you a lot more had you not started throwing hands with fans after the final whistle. Uruguay had all the makings of a new force in South American football. An almost-elite striker in Darwin Nunez taking the torch from Luis Suarez. One of the most versatile players in Fede Valverde. Top midfielders in Manuel Ugarte and Rodrigo Bentancur. Two season LaLiga center-backs with J.M. Giminez and Ronald Araujo. The missing ingredient was coaching, and Marcelo Bielsa had this team humming. But even they met one thing they could not beat: divine luck. The football gods said it was Colombia's time for glory. Then you go ahead and ruin all the good vibes by fighting fans... I know there are reports of Nunez's family feeling threatened so I won't go any further. Take the third place finish and the fiery presser by Bielsa and cash out while you still have some goodwill left.

Canada: Jesse Marsch only got appointed to the Canada job a month ago, and he led them to a Copa American semifinal. Are you listening, US Soccer? Sure you could argue Canada only scored two open play goals, and the metrics didn't exactly favor Canada, but it doesn't matter because it further fuels the narrative about how bad Gregg and the US Federation was. The real story for Canada was about Ismail Kone and Jacob Shafflenburg. They were the new standouts for the Canadians, proving their organic footballing project is continuing to work. They got dominated by Argentina, but let's be real, that was expected. Only giving up 2 goals to that Argentina side says something, though. Marsch has made them resilient and that will matter for the 2026 World Cup. Still, questions linger. What does the future hold for Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David? Both seem to be in the market for new clubs and the lack of offers for both is quite shocking, especially for David. Is Maxime Crépeau the long-term solution in net? Only time will tell. When did Canada suddenly get good at every sport?

Colombia: The chance to end a two-decade Copa America drought continues. This poor team. They've never recovered from the glory years of the 90s. This had been one of the best Colombia teams in generations. James Rodriguez had his renaissance season and proved the old No. 10 position is still workable. Luis Diaz proved he was fast...yea that's about all he did, I can't lie. Daniel Munoz might've had a better tournament. Davinson Sanchez and Carlos Cuesta made for a decent pairing at the back, considering all the clean sheets they kept. Jefferson Lerma's midfield skills really paid off keeping the ball tidy. They didn't even rely on their best talent to win, it was truly all vibes. Unfortunately, vibes don't work against a seasoned machine like Argentina. A glorious victory would've been Colombia's had the magic not clicked in the dying embers of the Final. A true shame, but it was a great run, something nobody expected. Will the gods please show mercy on Colombia?

Argentina: I can't tell if people are happy Messi won another international trophy and highkey did it 2016 Ronaldo style, or if they're more angry that Argentina is the undisputed king of South American football at this moment in time. Messi's contemplating life after football, and Angel Di Maria already made it known he was retiring after the Copa. The only way to go out was to win it all. And they did...again. Doing it in the same way as last time: be far superior on paper, but rely on divine luck and Messi magic. I'm dead serious when I say the match against Canada was the most complete performance by Argentina. The last-minute Lautaro winner is cool and all, but at the end of the day, you can't rely on that sort of style forever. There is a lot of hope, though. Even if Messi decides this is his last ride with Albiceleste, there is plenty of quality left to make up for it. Cristian Romero continued to cement himself as the best defender in the world. Licha Martinez was deadly in the air despite only being 5ft9. Alexis Mac Allister played like a man reborn. Julian Alvarez showcasing himself for his move out of Man City. Waves of young talent like Garnacho and Gonzalez to make up for it. Life after Messi will be hard, but they will not have to worry. It's way better than Brazil post Neymar.

Internationals are over, folks. We are now exactly one month until club season starts again. I for one am excited for the 2024-25 season. I hope you enjoyed this exposition of direct, in-line ball. Back to inverted fullbacks, low crosses into the box, and low blocks. Ahh, how I've missed it.
