Why are supermarket bakery donuts so shit?
Why are supermarket bakery donuts so shit?
Discussion

Look before you call me a whinge, don't get me wrong, I don't care that much. However... How is it that every supermarket in the country has been making the same dry as fuck, stale textured (even when fresh) donuts for more than 10 years, when every other bakery in the country has been making nice soft moist donuts the whole time? I'm sure the answer is that they don't care and people will buy them anyway, but it's bloody pathetic all the same.

Hi all just wondering if anyone else feels like the odd one out when with others. I just feel that when I'm with a group I'm the odd piece of the jigsaw that doesn't fit anywhere. I'm quite a friendly character someone whose always keen for a yarn and a laugh bit feel I haven't found my people yet . I'm 40 in 6mths and sort I thought i would of had this all figured out and have a good group of mates ... but I feel far from it

Anyone else been in that situation and managed to find your people.. are there alot odd jigsaw pieces out there

Why is it so expensive to travel to Queenstown ?
Why is it so expensive to travel to Queenstown ?
Discussion

I think NZ is too expensive to explore. I spent only 2 grand to go to Japan and Bali and got a lot of things done including getting some cheap dental treatments and cheap surfing lessons and experienced a new culture but when I went to Queenstown I think I spent the same amount of money and felt so empty after.

Why is it so expensive to go to queenstown and is there any point in going there and paying 200 bux per night? I do like hiking and nature but you can also go hiking and visit all the beautiful mountains in south east Asia and Japan. What's special about Queenstown? I heard it's full of Chinese tourists now.

Anyone else burning out?
Anyone else burning out?
Discussion

Work is getting me down, feeling like Im burning out and need a change but hoping for some advice.

It's weird because on paper I have a great job. Senior team member as a business analyst, Full autonomy, hybrid WFH, team all get along nicely, great boss, not unhappy with pay, But something is missing. I feel like I'm doing work that is achieving someone else's goal and so I don't feel fulfilled because I just don't care about what they want to achieve. And also what they want to achieve is boring and has little to no impact on anything of importance.

I really want to commit more to my wife's small business and grow it so I can do something that I want to achieve but it's a scary thought to leave a safe and decent job for the risk of a small business. Anyone been through this or have any advice? Anyway I can do both for a time without further burnout?

Mine is 10 and has 3 after school activities during the week and one on a Saturday. We tend to stay home and chill and do chores otherwise but it feels very boring! We’ll go to town if we have a real need to but otherwise don’t do a whole lot. She is a homebody but I sometimes wonder if we should be doing more. Keen to hear what other kiwis are doing with their kids, especially from parents of an only child!

NZ cost of housing since 1985
NZ cost of housing since 1985
Discussion

In 1985 the average cost of a house in NZ was $65,000, the average household income was $24,000 and interest rates peaked to 20%.

In 2021 the average cost of a house in NZ was $925,000, the average household income $110,000 with interest rates bottoming out at 2%.

This means if you bought a home in 1985 the value would have increased by 14x between 1985 - 2021. The average household income has only increased 4.5x within the same period.

Prior to 1970 the average interest rate was 6.5% and average house price under $20,000.

Today interest rates are just under 7% with many carrying debt levels 14x what a mortgage would have been in 1985.

How did we let this ponzi carry on for almost 40 years encouraging younger generations to take levels of mortgage debt beyond long term sustainability.

Hello! I've noticed that the items I used to buy at Pak'nSave and New World under the Value Brand have been changing to only Pams, and the prices have been going up slightly. For example, when I visited Pak'nSave earlier this week, I had to purchase Pams pasta (I have never seen before) instead of Value Brand, which was about 15 cents more for the same weight. I checked their website, the Value pasta is no longer available. I have seen a couple of other examples of this but I don't remember them right now. So are they trying to get rid of the value brand?

Advice

Our 1990 Toyota Coaster bus (named Matilda) was stolen last night from outside our house in Wellington, on Cockayne Road. The bus is white with navy blue trim, has two solar panels, and a Paekākāriki sticker on the back. Have a police report and updated CarJam, but spreading the word and appreciate you keeping an eye out. Not many of this bus and colourway in the Welly region, so if you seen one it might be mine! Gutted to lose her :(

Does anyone remember banana chocolate eclairs from NZ bakeries from the good old days?
Does anyone remember banana chocolate eclairs from NZ bakeries from the good old days?
Kiwiana

My Dad (in his 50s) is obsessed with this "banana chocolate eclair" like thing from his youth. He describes it as similar to an eclair or possibly a long donut. With banana flavouring and chocolate. Possibly banana custard cream filling and chocolate icing on top? But it's unclear. He says it was a classic bakery item but has never been able to find one anywhere and can't remember where he got it. So we take the piss and tell him it's a false memory. I have found various recipes online but they are pretty over the top and not quite what he remembers . I wonder if anyone else remembers something like it or could give more info? Man has been dreaming about this eclair for 20 or 30 years. This would've been in waikato or maybe auckland area btw.
