One of the most noteworthy (and long-awaited) new features in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 is the ability for users to choose which browser or email app should be set as the system default. If you click on a web link in older versions of iOS, it would always default to Safari; in iOS 14 you can instead choose a different browser to fill this role, from a list of approved alternatives.
Now, however, an unfortunate bug has been discovered that causes these customisation preferences to disappear when you restart your iPhone or iPad. In other words, Apple’s own Safari and Mail apps will again insist on opening when you click on links and the like.
In a statement to Cnet, Apple said it’s aware of the bug, and that it will be fixed in an upcoming update.
The first update of the new systems will probably be sent out within one to two weeks. Until then, you can minimise the effects of the bug by not restarting your phone or touchpad unnecessarily.
