Meet Senegal’s very first geographical indication! 👏 Madd – renowned for its distinctive flavor and nutritional properties – is a wild fruit that grows in the forests of Senegal’s Casamance region. Traditionally enjoyed locally as fresh fruit, juice, and jam, it is now gaining international recognition thanks to its registration as a geographical indication (GI). MADD DE CASAMANCE is a shining example of how GIs encourage development and sustainability: ✅ Economic empowerment – everyone, from harvesters to local communities benefits, from increased demand and higher market value. ✅ Environmental protection – harvesters learn to protect the environment in which the madd fruit thrives. ✅ Cultural preservation – local producers learn to protect quality products linked to origin, and to value the rich cultural heritage of the Casamance region. Meet the Madrid System's International Trademark Examiners! Examination is an important two-step process in the journey of an international trademark registration – first formal examination of content by us here at WIPO; then substantive examination by the intellectual property offices of countries where you seek brand protection. Last year, our examiners processed some 65,000 international trademark applications. Add to that all the requests to extend geographical scope of, or renew, existing international trademark registrations, and more, and we reach some 1 million transactions per year. 👏 Examination is tireless but essential work that ensures content issues are fixed early on so that your applications and registrations can continue their journey.
