Today I was pleased to co-author an article in STAT News on how "Digital devices can help clinicians prescribe physical activity" working with leaders from the American Heart Association (AHA), Physical Activity Alliance and Digital Medicine Society (DiMe). We highlight recent evidence and national guidelines promoting routine assessment and prescriptions of physical activity as a standard of care, and we propose using standardized digital measures as a vehicle to get there faster. To do less is a disservice to patients. Very interesting article. I have wondered about the evolution of this kind of feature with semi-specific suggestions based on my Oura HRV data or when my Apple Watch tells me my cardiac fitness (VO2 max) is trending up or down. I look forward to following this progress moving forward.
Great article and thanks for the resources linked! I'm also hoping we see a shift in effective prescription of physical activity to counteract troubling trends in diseases and mental health. Do you use any fitness trackers to measure any activities?
Terrific piece, John Hernandez, and always grateful for your partnership and leadership
We are already using such technology in our patient care protocol. Absolutely on point.
Congrats, John. I’m sure this will be really useful.

3wJohn Hernandez yes! We need to bring consumer wearables to clinical care - especially in behavioral health and obesity care. Sleep, activity, resting heart rate are such important biometrics to measure progress. And it provides agency to the patients. And start them early in life to learn about impact of healthy habits and understand the connections between behaviors and outcomes.
