Ultra Marathons & Single-Use! Just conquered the exhilarating 54KM Eiger Ultra Trail run amidst the breathtaking Swiss mountains! Not only thrilled by finishing (>3KM vertical) but also the commendable commitment to sustainability by the organizers UTMB®. 🏔️🏃♀️🌱 Lightweight reusable cups for the runners were mandatory to use at every refreshment station - such a simple yet significant eco-friendly initiative! 🌍 No production, no transport, no littering of single-use cups, and hardly any extra effort for us runners. Plus, it's hard to ignore the maths. With a similar event like the Eiger Ultra Trail hosting say 10K runners and six refuelling stations, we're talking about dodging a bullet of 60,000 single-use cups waste! 😮👏 Imagine the impact if this REFILLution implemented at larger events such as the iconic New York, Berlin, London, or Rotterdam marathons? We could prevent millions of single-use cups from ending up as waste! And this isn't just for big events. Even smaller runs like the Singelloop, Dam tot Damloop, or the Lutjebroek Loop can make a hefty dent in their carbon footprint with this simple switch. 🏃🌍♻️ I'm sure many of you know someone in the business of organising running events. The iconic #NoosaTriathlon starts this week. The five-day event, celebrating sports, healthy lifestyles, fitness and fun is Australia’s highest profile triathlon event and the largest Olympic distance triathlon in the world. The event organisers recognise that the event has both a positive and negative environmental impact, hence that they have employed a transition to a sustainable event. The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival has committed to: - Continue to divert >80% of all event waste from landfill in 2023 and improve upon this measurement year on year. - 100 volunteer hours as educational Waste Warriors located in event venues - $1 from every entry purchased will go to Tourism Noosa’s tree rehabilitation programme “Trees for Tourism” in partnership with Noosa & District Landcare. - Where possible use products that are sustainable and don’t generate any CO2 eg. Some serious problems were encountered at the Sydney Marathon over the weekend. It's been an unusually hot Spring in many parts of Australia. Last weekend's Sydney Marathon was run under very hot conditions. With Global Warming and Climate Change now a measurable entity (and a VERY serious problem!) we may be starting to deal with more and more races and events in running, cycling and triathlon, perhaps in the past run in moderate conditions, that are run in hot to very hot conditions going forward! Just in the last year, I have Announced at one race/event that was cancelled due to heat. One that shortened the distances raced over due to heat, and several others where, one of my important race-day Announcing tasks, was special wording (imploring really) to make sure that athletes and participants, took part with caution, and to take care of themselves and to look out for their fellow participants in the hot conditions to keep a check on them! . . and it's not just the participants who may be at risk in conditions like this, it could also be, Event Staff, Volunteers and Spectators!! 𝗠𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁/𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻: 𝟭𝟬 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 🏃🏽♂️ 1. Running a marathon outwith an official one, without spectators, would be death by a thousand paper-cuts. Having so many people take time to support all the marathon runners is absolutely class and proper wholesome. 2. Completing a marathon, FOR ME, was more of a challenge than a lifestyle- doing this more than once would seem massively unappealing at this stage! 3. It’s easy to go out HOT and run fast too quickly. I found this out the hard way. Your adrenaline is pumping and you feel on top of the world in the early stages… yet around 30km in, you feel like you’re weights round your ankles. 4. Using the “Runna” app for training was a saviour as it keeps you accountable to a solid plan, however, the pacing element is rough and learning to stick to a certain pace is really hard. 5. On the day there are pacers, which I didn’t actually know, that definitely helped me on the day. It’s good to know what you’re averaging without constantly looking at your phone/ watch for updates. 6. Intra-run carbohydrates are key for longer runs. Of course the gels are great, but having some solid foods like jelly babies or squashies are ideal alongside these. 7. Strava is full of hype men and women. 8. Not all hero’s wear capes- the gentleman who saw me on my knees (in pain with cramp) at a service station half way to Scotland was also coming back from the marathon and loaned me his massage gun whilst he had some food- this guy is a legend. 9. Doing an event like this without a partner/ friend or family member on hand to support would be horrible! Rebecca was a wife, carer and physio in one! 10. @koba.run is the best starting place for anyone looking for a judgement free, chilled out approach to getting started in running. As I prepare for my 18th and 19th marathons, in the vibrant city of Berlin and the legendary city of Chicago, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey that is marathon running. Running a marathon, which is a race that covers a distance of 42.2 kilometres (26.2 miles), is a challenging goal that only 0.01% of the global population has done. It requires a lot of determination and may make the others 99.99% view you as crazy. They may be right, but running a marathon is a journey that demands unwavering determination, relentless focus, and unparalleled grit. Marathon running is not just a physical feat; it's a mental battle. Your head, not your legs, will carry you to the finish line. Whether you're a first-time marathoner, who found the courage to embark on this journey and envisioned herself triumphantly crossing the finish line, or a seasoned pro, who shoulders the weight of expectations, or you simply embrace running a marathon each year as a vital part of a healthy lifestyle, we all share the same unwavering commitment. 2023 Inter Company Relay under the theme "Reignite your health " When I started the 10KM marathon , I knew it was a mountain I challenged myself to climb so I did it anyway 💪 Half way I felt like stopping,and going back was the only thing in mind. 😥 When I looked back I saw a lot of people behind me.  I looked in front ,the road was still going. 😰 I tried to slow the pace but the more I slowed the pace the more I felt tired  because the body got used to my pace. At that point there was no turning back. 🥹 Then I told myself the following things: 1. To run according to my pace and timing 💪 2. To finish what I started(Marathon) despite the tiredness. 🙏 3. Push myself till the finish line. 💪 After sometime, I regained some strength and continued running,then I saw heroes stadium at a distance, i felt a sign of relief😅 that's when the energy boosted even more. 🏃♂️ From then onwards the the focus was even more clearer ,reaching heroes stadium and crossing the finish line. 🏃♂️ To cut the story short, the finish line was crossed a medal was given. 🏅 Lessons I picked up from the 10km marathon. 1. Life is not a 100m race competition but a marathon where you run at your own pace and timing. 2. In life the owner is not the beginner but the finisher. Some people that started with speed during the marathon finished towards the end. Aim to finish regardless of speed. 3. Setting focus on the goal(finish line)and pushing oneself towards it even when it seems impossible. 4. Some journeys(marathons) look too impossible to begin,but start anyway,the driving forces to inspire one to complete those journeys are within. 5. Stay healthy 😅 #Theclearchoice
