Yesterday was an incredible way to see out 2023 events with some of Adyen most awesome Partners at the St Princes Golf course down in Sandwich. It was so good seeing so many good friends, making news ones and bringing the Payments / Fin Tech eco system together over laughs and 18 holes, even the sun showed up. There is nothing more powerful for me then the power of Partnerships, it’s how all of our businesses grow. A huge thanks from all of in in attendance yesterday to the legend that is Ben Rainbow for putting together a fantastic event. Of course it’s even better when you hit form, Big drives, ( only 2 fairways missed ) draining putts and recording a net 69 ( -3 ) with 39 points to finish second. Rapyd is getting ready to cross $1 billion in revenue...and could be the next Fintech IPO. The growth will come in part from the $600 million acquisition PayU (announced over the summer). Crucially, in acquiring PayU, Rapyd made sure that moving payment volumes from PayU clients to Rapyd would not require those clients to write a single line of code. I sat down recently w/ the Founder & CEO, Arik Shtilman, to talk about how Rapyd went from: (1) a failed DTC company => (2) rapid organic growth as a B2B2C platform serving marquee customers like Google & Uber with non-obvious global payment needs => (3) rapid organic + inorganic growth as they continue to serve those customer and acquire other companies. Love this conversation since it pulls on so many threads that are common for founders in fintech about (1) how hard it is to get started (2) how important it is to find your first large customer and serve them well (in this case Uber) and (3) how even at scale you keeping finding new problems that need solving. It’s never not fun working out of the Adyen HQ in Amsterdam, always loads of new faces to meet, old colleagues to catch up with and inspire and be inspired. The one question I get asked more than any other is what is my current number of wins that day, I love it how it intrigues everyone and I’m always excited to tell them. While that number grows what they don’t see is that I’ve also lost more times than anyone else and definitely made more mistakes than anyone else in Adyen history. However the two come hand in hand, you don’t become successful without doing what others are not prepared to do, you learn more from your losses and mistakes then you will ever do from your wins. Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire, be prepared to make mistakes and be prepared to lose it’s how we grow. The most practical skill in life is learning to do things when you don't feel like doing them. Anyone can do it when it's easy, but most people drop out the minute it gets hard. Sometimes its not about who has more talent. It's about who is hungrier. Do the right thing at the right time and while you might think you are a nobody you might just turn out to be the GOAT. I've failed many times in my life and career and because of this l've learned a lot. Instead of feeling defeated countless times, l've used it as fuel to drive me to work harder. It’s only Wednesday’s morning in New York City but it feels like it’s been an incredible week already. I’ve been lucky enough over the years to be able to be a regular trainer of Sales to new starters at Adyen alongside my Sales role. It’s never not a privilege to be asked and it’s a badge of honour I constantly talk about. That honour is even cooler this week as it evolves into train the trainer. It’s so much fun being in and around new Adyeners just starting out on their Adyen journey, seeing their excitement, the nerves, the energy, the thirst for new knowledge, it really is inspiring. What they don’t realise is that as the trainer I’m the one that comes away with the most learnings as they bring fresh ideas which challenge us. As a trainer it’s then up to us to think them through and then continue to adapt, iterate and evolve for the benefit of everyone. As a story teller I love an analogy so the process is very much like my golf swing, The more I learn, the more I simplify it. Consistency will then further my progress and constant feedback will refine my skill. Once a year everyone at Adyen travels to Amsterdam to connect: with what we’ve accomplished, with where we’re going and most importantly with each other. This is such an impactful week for us. But many of the lessons scale beyond Adyen. Here are the takeaways from day 1: 💡There’s not always a perfect plan. At #Adyen, we launch fast and iterate. Practice beats theory! Working on things that don’t work out is how we learn. We’re not here to maintain the status quo - this is the place to be if you want to #build. 🛑 What does creative writing and scaling a #fintech have in common? To get over the finish line, dare to kill your darlings. If what you’re working on isn’t creating #impact, pause, prioritize and pivot. 🥇Adyen’s success comes from creating our own path. When we first eyed building acquiring everyone said “don’t do it”. But when we explored it, we saw a way and set out to build it in 1.5 years. 1 year and three months later (!) we were live.
