Last week I had the incredible opportunity to attend the 1t.org US Summit in the big apple with our Director of Impact, Kathleen Buckingham.
1t.org aims to connect, empower, and serve a global movement to conserve, restore and grow one trillion trees.
My favourite takeaways:
1. We need to share and propagate best practices.
2. Innovation is key.
3. Transparency is paramount.
4. Be ready to embrace complexity.
5. Bring a friend. We are at the beginning of our regenerative journey, and we need strength in numbers. Let’s have a party and get everyone involved.
6. All Hands & All Lands - this includes private, public, communities, consumers, influencers, NGOs etc.
7. Let’s restore nature to improve biodiversity and help people. If we do this right, carbon sequestration is a great bi-product.
8. There are approximately 3 trillion trees on our planet right now and we used to have 6.
9. Danger -> Rescue -> Progress. Danger will lead to progress after rescue. For example, if your house is on fire you are not going to play golf, you will do everything possible to put the fire out and save your family and belongings. Well I hate to say it, but our Earth is on fire, and we must act now with the same urgency. The smoke rolling into NYC and up to the steps of the Whitehouse in DC weeks ago is an unfortunate wake up call that we must take positive climate actions before it’s too late.
10. Planting 1 trillion trees is not our silver bullet to solving our climate problems, but it is one very important piece of the puzzle!
