AI to track and warn against pandemics Scientists have developed an AI-based machine-learning system to track the evolution of epidemic viruses and predict the emergence of viral variants. In a study using data on SARS-CoV-2 variants and COVID-19 mortality rates, the system successfully predicted the emergence of new variants of concern ahead of their official designation by the World Health Organization. This breakthrough could enable real-time tracking of future viral pandemics, providing valuable insights for public and private health organizations. The research team hopes to uncover pandemic virus evolution rules through this innovative approach, helping society better prepare for and combat potential future pandemics. #ai #machinelearning #VirusEvolution #PredictiveAnalytics #EpidemicTracking #COVID19Variants #publichealth #pandemicpreparedness #realtimetracking #healthcareinnovation

Sex differences in cardiovascular disease diagnosis and risk assessment? 💚💜 YES! Let's look at the numbers. ⬇ Skyler St. Pierre, Bartek, Ellen Kuhl, and I took a deep dive into the UK biobank data and found that: 📢 women are under-diagnosed for cardiovascular diseases using sex-neutral criteria 📢 not all Framingham risk factors were found to be important; including ECG data can strongly improve risk assessment 📢 men and women only shared 5 out of the top 10 most important risk factors Want to know more? Check out the preprint here: https://lnkd.in/eEdbtb-Y and don't forget to read up on our prior work on - sex differences in cardiac electrophysiology and drug-induced arrhythmia (https://lnkd.in/excihifk) - sex differences in cardiac mechanics in health and disease (https://lnkd.in/ds9pyiHX) Lastly, as nicely put by Skyler, although sex is treated as a binary variable in the UK Biobank, there is much overlap between "male" and "female" distributions. Therefore, in the long haul, evolving from sex-agnostic to sex-specific to patient-specific medicine would be the best outcome for everyone. #sexdifferences #cardiovascular #diagnosis #riskassessment #machinelearning #deeplearning #ukbiobank #clinical #hypertension #ischemia #arrhythmia
I am so excited to share my latest work with Bartek, Mathias Peirlinck, and Ellen Kuhl on "Sex-specific cardiovascular risk factors in the UK Biobank", out on MedRxiv. We found that 1) women are under-diagnosed for cardiovascular diseases compared to men 2) the novel SAINT deep learning pipeline outperformed the state-of-the-art for tabular data, XGBoost 3) adding ECG features to the traditional Framingham risk score would be an easy way to increase risk prediction. #cardiovascular #healthcare #deeplearning https://lnkd.in/g89pvCJw

𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬❗Scientists have used AI to discover a new antibiotic, named "abaucin," that effectively combats Acinetobacter baumannii, a dangerous superbug. A baumannii is a critical threat in healthcare facilities, causing infections in various areas and developing resistance to treatment. The bacteria can live for prolonged periods of time on environmental services and shared equipment, and can often be spread through contaminated hands. In addition to blood infections, A baumannii can cause infections in urinary tracts and lungs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the bacteria can also “colonize” or live in a patient without causing infections or symptoms.💉🔬 By employing an AI algorithm, researchers have rapidly screened thousands of antibacterial molecules, leading to the identification of abaucin. Testing on a wound infection model in mice demonstrated its ability to suppress the infection. 🐭💊 This groundbreaking study highlights the potential of AI in antibiotic discovery. #AI #MedicalResearch #Science
