The theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Planet vs. Plastics,” an important reminder of the growing environmental crisis around plastic waste and its potential toll on societies and ecosystems around the world. My team at X, the moonshot factory is focused on developing technology to radically reduce global waste, starting with plastics. As someone who’s spent their entire career working on sustainable materials, I’ve experienced the problem firsthand from all facets—but I’ve also learned about potential solutions for addressing it, no matter how closely tied you are to the climate industry. In honor of Earth Day, I’ve reflected on my journey into the plastics space and how others can get involved. #circulareconomy #planetvsplastics #recycling #googlesustainability #xthemoonshotfactory #earthday2024

Paragraph 8 should be required reading before any discussion around plastics Rey Banatao, nicely done!

"I realized that as a materials scientist, instead of focusing on making new materials, I’d have a bigger impact figuring out what to do with all the materials the world has already made." And there it is ... the transformative "What if?" question that has inspired many at X (myself included) to work on solutions that can truly unlock circularity for a healthier planet. What if we can stop extracting from Mother Earth, but make it easier to reuse and recycle what we already have above ground? Thank you for inspiring so many of us with this challenge!
