Have #bans ever kept kids away? With recent legislations on restricting #socialmedia accounts for minors, the conversation should focus instead on regulating the promotion of certain content rather than an outright ban.
In our new research publication led by Lynsie Ranker:
· Among kids who did not use tobacco, kids who were daily users of social media were ❗ 67% more likely to start using tobacco 1 year later ❗
· The same pattern holds when examining social media engagement (liking/following brands). Kids who liked/followed a tobacco brand on social media were more likely to start using tobacco compared to kids who did not like/follow a tobacco brand.
This study is one of the first to examine both social media use frequency and brand engagement and their independent associations with subsequent tobacco and polytobacco initiation.
