Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration is the answer to many very difficult questions we have in the cannabis industry. Let's work together to rise together. #thepeoplesecosystem #cannabis #cannabisculture #cannabiscommunity #cannabisindustry
CEO & Co-Founder at The People's Ecosystem | Managing Member of The People's Group | Entrepreneur, Advocate, Advisor, Board Member Speaker & Thought Leader
There is one thing I know for sure, being a cannabis social equity applicant is NO JOKE. It is one of the HARDEST things to do in any state. The #1 reason that is true is the lack of resources, all types of resources, not just capital. If you know anything about The People's Ecosystem, you know we believe collaboration is the key to moving ahead in this industry, especially if you are not a large corporation. That's no shade to large canna corps, just facts. In Maryland, there was a big deadline yesterday if you wanted to apply to be part of the lottery. And I want to give a HUGE shoutout to our collective team for putting 4 applications into the lottery, supporting over 12 justice-involved people, with the hope that one, if not more, get pulled. We know it's a long shot, but we have hope. When I say team, I mean TEAM. This effort was kicked off by Council for Federal Cannabis Regulation (CFCR), initiated by Sheri Orlowitz, our fearless leader, myself, Frederika M. Easley, we are co-chairs of the DEI & Access 2 Capital Committee, Steve Landuyt (Chair), and Albert J. Angel of the CFCR Corporate and Business Committee. We partnered with Northern Real Estate Urban Ventures L.L.C. and Project Community Capital to help us identify our social equity pool and our real estate. We interviewed many applicants, and when I tell you my heart was bursting hearing their stories about how cannabis incarceration affected their lives and the lives of their family and friends. It reinforced why everyone on this project is determined to see this through, no matter the outcome. We owe it to our community to do everything in our power to make sure those most affected are also owners in this industry. This is our forever mission. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the mammoth effort across four organizations. It was a beautiful experience to be part of, and I will never forget it. #thepeoplesecosystem #cannabis #cannabisculture #cannabiscommunity #cannabisindustry #CFCR

The Council for Federal Cannabis Regulation (CFCR) is delighted to honor and spotlight our esteemed Founder and Board Chair Sheri Orlowitz during Women’s History Month. Over her illustrious 30-year career, Sheri has held diverse roles including federal prosecutor, corporate attorney, entrepreneur, investor, turnaround expert, and philanthropist. She has steered a multitude of companies, a portfolio that includes acquisitions from industry giants like Eastman Kodak Company, Tyco International, and Applied Magnetic. A quarter-century ago, driven by her unwavering commitment to social justice, Sheri founded the Orlowitz-Lee Children’s Advocacy Center, a nonprofit dedicated to combatting human trafficking. This year, she spearheaded the development of a National Social Equity Model. Sheri envisioned the Council for Federal Cannabis Regulation as the catalyst to unite patient stakeholders, the cannabis industry, and federal legislators in forging a secure and inclusive marketplace. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sheri for her tireless dedication to establishing a safe and equitable cannabis marketplace. Sheri Orlowitz #cannabis #medicalcannabis #cannabisequity #DEI

A new report issued by Los Angeles-based SIVA ENTERPRISE LIMITED and authored by Avis Bulbulyan offers a scathing critique of the various social equity programs across the nation. Social equity programs was pioneered by the city of #oakland in 2018. The original program had good intentions but the criterias to be able to qualify was too restrictive, ans the people that did qualify, a lot of times end up getting taken advantage of. Oakland has made a lot of changes to their program and it is starting to help but most programs out there do not end helping people. The author of the report offers ways to improve the programs. Instead of focusing on who will win how many number of business licenses, the goals of #socialequity would be better accomplished by reorienting such programs so that they prioritize community reinvestment, such as: Job training. Mentorship. Other avenues of support for those who were hurt by cannabis prohibition. Thank you John Schroyer from the Green Market Report for the national update. #cannabisindustry #cannabiscommunity #cannabisnews #cannabiseducation #cannabispolicy #cannbislaw https://lnkd.in/g5T239xs

I attended the “Creating the Conditions for Black Business Owners and Leaders to Succeed in the Cannabis Industry” session during last month’s Annual Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference and wished I recorded the discussion, as the State of Maryland and our social equity intentions were highlighted so nicely by Hope Wiseman, owner of Mary and Main located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. “It’s just been a huge journey watching Maryland evolve from a state that had absolutely no social equity initiatives to being a model program,” said Wiseman, owner of Mary and Main. “I’m happy that the people who come behind me won’t have the same struggles and won’t have to go through the same hoops that I did. It’ll be much easier going forward.” I'm thrilled to share this informative article from The AFRO-American Newspapers shedding light on commitment’s to social equity in the cannabis industry. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eQTHjM_3 As the cannabis industry continues to expand, it's vital that opportunities are accessible to all, particularly those who have been disproportionately affected by the criminalization of cannabis. It’s exciting to be a part of Maryland’s proactive steps to create a more equitable and inclusive cannabis landscape. #CannabisIndustry #SocialEquity #MarylandCannabis #Inclusion #Entrepreneurship #CannabisBusiness #EquitableOpportunities

Dear LinkedIn CO cannabis community, I wanted to take a moment to recognize the incredible work of Michael Diaz-Rivera, a father, former public school teacher, and business owner in the Colorado cannabis industry (Better Days Delivery). In an impactful email to Senator Rachel Zenzinger, Michael passionately advocates for the follow through on funding of a robust social equity grant program in 2021. I wanted to share the highlights with you all to kinda put Michael on blast about how knowledgable and passionate he is about the community. 🤗 His insights shed light on the vital role that financial support plays in creating opportunities for those facing challenges in the cannabis industry. The proposed $5,000,000 allocation, as outlined by the Governor's Office, aims to fill crucial gaps by funding technical assistance and capital incentive programs for social equity candidates, like Michael, and like so many of us in the space. Michael emphasizes the need to prioritize funding for the social equity grant program in the 2021 legislative session, providing a timely solution to the challenges faced by marginalized business operators striving for success in the legal cannabis industry. Let's join Michael in supporting this important cause, ensuring that social equity candidates receive the assistance they need to thrive. Together, we can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable cannabis industry. ☀ Better Days Are On The Way, and it's advocates like Michael who are driving 🚘 that positive change! #CannabisIndustry #SocialEquity #CommunityImpact #Advocacy
