What is the point of growing up without a competitive mindset? I was a bright student during my school days. After my 7th standard, the so-called prime competitors in my class left the school. The competition became low and I got the opportunity to shine anywhere and everywhere. On the other hand, my graph was declining for future moves. I never tried to upskill to beat anyone, I didn't look to get the best out and I stayed on the same point till I realised the fact. When I entered a wider competitive space, things were extremely tough and I struggled a lot. Remember, ✳️If your brand is growing at a good pace, try to make it the best. ✳️If your competitors are weak, find better ones yourself. ✳️You have got a place to shine, put your maximum there instead of thinking that you are already at the front row. ✳️Always try to ponder that this is not the final stage, you have battles to conquer. ✳️It may be easy to beat existing competitors, but the world is vast and competitors with 2X strength may come today or tomorrow. Well said about impact! This class is great because it lays out the landscape of platforms and marketplaces. It combines strategy, operations and pricing, but calls out natural characteristics of marketplaces that make them thrive. Not to mention insights from CEOs and executives who have first hand experience managing the complexity of marketplaces.

Can a review kill a company? Short answer, in my opinion, is no. However, it can be the domino that starts the process of a company or product's demise without some resilience. The MKBHD review on Humane's new wearable AI pin is a great case study. In the review, MKBHD sung the praises of the craftsmanship of the device while also giving constructive feedback ultimately concluding that the pin didn't provide a great experience above what his smart phone was capable of. The internet wanted to weigh in between takes like, "With great reach comes great responsibility" juxtaposed with "influencers should never moonlight as a company's PR outlet." My take? The reason people watch creator reviews is, over all things, they will be raw and honest and the Humane team has an opportunity to lean in. Short term, yes, there's some PR management happening but medium/long term, I think Humane has an opportunity to take this product feedback, release a V2 that improves functionality and ultimately make this device a big success. If there was a V2 of the AI pin I could absolutely see MKBHD doing a second review - even if not a full video, acknowledging improvement of the product would be huge. Two things I wanted to call out: 1) Via Google Trends, Humane reached peak interest in Google's search platform shortly after MKBHD's review, receiving on average ~10% of the interest over the previous 30 days. The spotlight is on them. 2) Humane received product feedback from maybe the most important tech influencer in the world for free. This would be massively expensive to do privately or publicly through paid sponsorship. A bad review, even from the most influential person in your field, does not mean the demise of your company. While difficult to execute, Humane has the opportunity to make a major stride in their product while all eyes are on them. This, to me, is a stroke of luck compared to lagging adoption due to a bad consumer experience. I recently came across a post by Viraj Sheth, founder of Monk Entertainment, where he boldly declared that the time of written content is over. I disagree. Now, before making this argument, I know the odds are stacked against me. 🧠 Videos are processed 60,000 times faster than text. 🧠 Videos have a 90% retention rate, while text lingers at a mere 10%.  🧠 The average attention span of humans is 8 seconds.  🧠 The average person consumes 4 articles and almost 8200 words daily. Now let me tell you exactly what’s my argument against it. As a finance student at the University of Toronto in wintry Canada, I knew I had a rare opportunity to take advantage of all the extracurriculars outside of class. Despite trying out in the Table Tennis league (we managed to finish second-last!) and starting my own investment club, I knew there was a creative spark in me that needed to be ignited.  The tantalising promise of free pizza got me through the doors of the Varsity Publications Inc., the eminent student newspaper of the university. I was immediately hooked. I could finally fashion my childhood passion for writing into a reality. My articles covered everything from the tragic history of racism in football to underrated films of renowned directors. I followed this up with a collection of short stories, with each tale spanning the length of a single conversation between two people. I wasn’t sure of the reach my projects had, but I pressed on, driven by an innate desire to express myself. And then the moment arrived. During the pandemic and the streaming boom that followed, I was working as a Creative Producer to develop stories for film and TV. For the first time ever, I was surrounded with people, who like me, just wanted to tell a good story. This transformative environment helped me foster, develop and pitch my own web series to network executives. Against all odds, a fantasy show developed by 22-year-old kid resonated with the guys that run streaming services. With every stroke of my pen, my craft improved and with each successive content piece, I managed to reach a larger audience. This is why I believe the potency of the written word goes beyond SEO and sales conversions. It goes beyond the ever-improving reading habits of Indians. Statistics will fail to tell you what my journey has. The beating heart of all my accomplishments, may it be graduating with distinction from the University of Toronto or founding Odanta, is storytelling.
