In a recent Workplace Red Flag Survey, two of the top red flags that can cause turnover involve meetings. "Meetings that could have been an email" and "Weekly status meetings" top the list of frustrations for employees. Both of these meetings lack conflict. Emails are merely informative and "status" is a stagnant term. There's no motion, movement, or meaning. The goal of any meeting should be passionate, unfiltered debate about the most important aspects of the business. You may think this sounds silly. But I’ve experienced something incredible that many people (maybe you) think is totally weird. It's the power of meetings. And I bet you have too. Because everyone has if they’ll admit it. Take a moment to consider this. Bad meetings have tremendous NEGATIVE power. They wreck employee morale and business performance. Thankfully the opposite is also true. Good meetings have tremendous POSITIVE power. They boost employee morale and business performance. So if you’re doing what I’m doing and trying your best to lead productive, effective meetings (even though you don’t always get it right), I encourage you to stick with it. What you’re doing is not weird and it’s definitely not silly. It’s important work – work that positively impacts business performance and, importantly, people’s lives. Keep at it! --- P.S. The Power of Weekly 1:1 Meetings 🌟 In the dynamic landscape of today's workplaces, fostering strong relationships between managers and their team members is key to driving success. One powerful tool in achieving this is the weekly 1:1 meeting. For me, these regular touchpoints are not just routine check-ins; they are opportunities for meaningful conversations that can inspire, empower, and align. They're about nurturing the heart of your business – ❤️ Your people ❤️ Gallup found that having regular one-on-one meetings skyrocketed engagement by 300%. 🔍 Here are my tips for managers to elevate your 1:1 meetings: 1️⃣ Active Listening: It’s their meeting, not yours! Dedicate time to truly listen to your employees. Understanding their challenges, goals, and aspirations can lead to more tailored support and guidance. 2️⃣ Never Cancel: Schedule weekly 30 minutes slots. Reschedule, never cancel. 3️⃣ Personal Touch: Take the time to know your employees beyond their professional roles. Building personal connections can enhance trust and rapport. Most important: don’t jump directly into the agenda. Do a „check-in“ and ask for their current energy/health level. Listen to the answer! Support and help. 4️⃣ Right Set-Up: Find a quiet, privat space. Sometimes, do them out of the office. Walk the talk can enhance flowing thoughts and fruitful discussions. 5️⃣ Goal Alignment: Use these meetings to align individual objectives with broader team and organizational goals. This alignment fosters a sense of purpose and direction. Encourage them to share their own aspirations and ambitions. 6️⃣ Feedback Culture: Create an open dialogue for feedback. Constructive feedback, both given and received, is essential for growth and continuous improvement. Feedback needs to be very specific. Always give clear examples. 7️⃣ Development Discussions: Discuss opportunities for skill development and career growth. Supporting employee growth benefits both the individual and the organization. 8️⃣ Ask them: how you can be a better manager for them? What you can work on? 9️⃣ Ongoing Support: Provide ongoing support, monitor the progress and offer guidance if needed. 🔟 Celebrate achievements: Reinforce accountability and don’t forget to highlight and celebrate their achievements.
