UK Government Announces Major Investment in Computer Science Education The UK government has recently announced a major investment in computer science education in an effort to prepare the next generation for the digital age. The £84 million investment will be used to train more than 8,000 new computer science teachers, as well as to create new course materials and resources for schools across the country. The investment comes as part of the government's commitment to improving the quality of education in STEM subjects, which are seen as crucial for the future economic competitiveness of the UK. WHY should you participate? Computer science is a rapidly growing field that is impacting all areas of life and processes of governance. The earlier students get exposed to computer science and computational thinking, the more likely they are to be able to engage meaningfully in the future workforce and with future decision-making processes. Unfortunately, Native American students have been shown to be the least likely to have access to computer science education opportunities. In my work with Holy Family University as an Industry Mentor for the School of Business and Technology, I send the Computer Science students a monthly newsletter. Computer science education in secondary schools across Europe has been evolving rapidly in response to the increasing importance of digital skills and the growing demand for a tech-savvy workforce. The expansion of the subject into second level education is an example of best practice in promoting the study of computer science and safeguarding the pipeline of young IT professionals in Europe.
