This month we want to highlight some of our incredible interpreter educators. Many of you have seen our Resident Historical Foodways Interpreter Dontavius Williams cooking and educating the public in Stratford Hall’s 1738 kitchen or in our many recorded programs. Dontavius specializes in storytelling and foodways interpreting, sharing the stories and the recipes of enslaved Africans and African Americans, specifically Caesar who was the enslaved cook at Stratford during the Revolutionary War period. When we asked Dontavius "How do you honor Black History through your work?" he replied “As an interpreter of the history of these United States, I choose to tell all of the history through the lens of those who were marginalized due to their station in life in this country, the enslaved. I stand on the shoulders of giants who were silenced by the times and many times forced to the margins under the system of chattel slavery; a system created to keep Africans bound forever. Today, I stand as a testament that the system of chattel slavery did not work. I also stand as proof of the effects of said system. As I do this work, I not only honor the life and legacy of my ancestors, but I am the voice of my ancestors in this modern world. #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHistory #AmericanHistory #18thCentury #18thCenturyHistory #History #HistoryFacts #stratfordhall

Today we celebrate #Juneteenth as a time of reflection, of recognition and of respect for the history of America. Juneteenth (June 19th) is the nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday originates from events that occurred in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, when General Gordon Granger informed enslaved people in Texas of their freedom. These were some of the last enslaved people to receive word of the end of slavery. Acknowledging Juneteenth as a national holiday forces us to recognize the history of America. It is by deep listening and acknowledgement of the lived experiences of African Americans in the US that we can make progress. Today many organizations around the country give Juneteenth as a national holiday. Juneteenth is a reminder that we have come so very far and still have so far to go. Our upcoming lecture will interpret the "First Emancipation," when thousands of people of African heritage secured freedom by the end of the 18th century. They would establish many of America's earliest free communities of color, which became the stomping grounds of free African American religious, educational, civic, and, most notably, political expression well before most African-heritage people obtained emancipation after the Civil War. https://lnkd.in/gJihnVfG

Every year in the month of February African American History is celebrated. Why? Because it is important to praise the importance of the African-American community, its contributions and its legacy in the country. Additionally, we can take this time to honor their eternal fight to end the abuses and inequalities they have suffered since their arrival in the United States. Juneteenth has been celebrated in Black communities for over a century, but only became a federally recognized holiday in the U.S. in June of 2021. While this is not an official holiday in #Canada (and the historical roots of Juneteenth relate to the abolishment of slavery in the United States), it should be celebrated by Canadians as well. Canadians can use Juneteenth as a celebration of Black history in Canada and as an avenue to open dialogue for thinking about the history of #race , racial relations and #education , and Canada's role in the slave trade as we share a settler-colonial history with the United States. Are you familiar with #juneteenth? If not, here's a brief introduction: https://lnkd.in/gcRbbyay
