When Big Tech says something is #free, it means that you're the product. 🤢 The internet should be a place of #freedom not a platform for data collection. 💃 Start taking your #privacy back by supporting open source alternatives to Big Tech! 💪 👉 https://lnkd.in/gvZn4kyM

Co-founder, Director Communications @Nextcloud | Regain control over your data 💪 | We're growing fast and hiring! And my real name is Jos, but Linkedin doesn't like it 🙃
Reminded today how deeply user-unfriendly Google's data hunger is. Just trying to see a document that was shared with me - but ofc, google just gives me "log or create an account". Not going to happen as that requires a ton of personal data & agreeing to a ton of crazy terms of service... If you want to share a document with somebody, please don't force them to hand over their #privacy to google, don't use Google Docs. Use #Nextcloud, or - well, anything else that's not #BigTech and just tries to get people's personal data. #privacy

"Free" isn't really free - there's always a price. $600 is what you're worth to Facebook and Google combined per year. Now imagine all the other "free" services you use, and your life is worth is quite a lot. #Privacy #BigData #TechTuesday #Tech #Technology #TheMoreYouKnow #DevLife #WomenInTech #Tips #TuesdayTip

Why server-side tracking is gaining momentum⁉ Here are some compelling reasons: - More Accurate Data Gathering: Server-side tracking bypasses restrictions like ITP and ad blockers, providing a clearer picture of user activities. - Better Data Quality: Simplified data collection leads to more trustworthy and useful insights. - Increased Compliance: Maintain control over data gathering and comply with data privacy laws like GDPR. - Improved User Experience: Reduce page load times for an enhanced user experience, benefiting both users and SEO. A much less obvious strategy to make systems more #privacy friendly, is to use the concept of separation. Separating the #processing logically or physically prevents the unwanted combination of several pieces of personal data, collected for different purposes. #privacybydesign

What would digital look like if it was #PrivacyDay every day? At https://fairpatterns.com/, we believe it's critical to empower users to make their own, free and informed choices. That's why during #PrivacyWeek, we're excited to share some of our latest #privacy #fairpatterns. Our interfaces are designed to ensure users actually understand what is done with their #personaldata and can make meaningful choices, based on their preferences. Why? Eer...Who wants to end up being under surveillance by their microwave? Who wants to be tracked or geocalized all the time, supposedly to "find more friends" - when what's for sure, is that hundreds of data brokers are the ones who find you 👾 Digital is not doomed to end up in #surveillancecapitalism, it's for all of us to decide what we want corporations and networks to know about us. Let's start with the basics: the "bad old" #cookiebanners. Remember the ones with the big fat green button to "Accept All", while you're looking in vain for the "decline all" button? A clear #darkpattern, manipulating your salience bias and default effect. Here's a fix: a cookie banner with 2 equally salient buttons to Accept All or Decline All, with clear and plain language, and no toying with emotions about supposedly "yummy cakes". Now, which button should be placed on the right hand side, the one we naturally click on? Our position is that when the user initiates the action, the "accept' button should be on the right. When information or action is pushed to the users, the "decline" button should be on the right. What do you think? Join us in celebrating #PrivacyDay and let's work together to create a more privacy-focused digital world. #ethicaldesign #fairnessbydesign #deceptivedesign #gdpr
