I've see loads of posts condemning the chopping down of the tree in sycamore gap. I suppose the very fact that sentence is worded that way, says it all about how famous a natural asset it was that the area inherited a trees name. Having walked past it I appreciate the atmosphere of the place and it feels like we have been robbed of a cultural asset and yes I'm angry.
But, I also wonder, why are we be surprised that a 16 year old doesn't respect trees or the natural world?
🚆 We bulldoze trees by the hundreds for housing, for infrastructure and for any construction project we fancy. Or even whole scale clearance of woodland at night just because it's been decided that it's going much to the horror of nearby residents.

🏞 Our government is trying to cancel nutrient neutrality plans and other legislation designed to protect our natural environment.

🌿 Our government this week has announced that they are 'pushing back' biodiversity net gain legislation to 2024.

🚋🤑Our government is saying that short term economics is more important that long term environmental policies. All we hear from our leaders are soundbites that divide our society. https://lnkd.in/eCKmXuuG
🤑 Our government know better, but they are playing politics with our future.
🪵So why are we surprised that a 16 year old kid has chopped down a tree? Why should that 16 year old respect the natural world, the power of trees and the value of these places for society?
That kid has received the message from our government loud and clear that the natural world doesn't matter. That our climate pledges do not matter. That our biodiversity crisis do not matter. Surely MPs and the elite of our country should be applauding such acts?! 🏅They should be in the next kings honours for services to the economy?! No?
So before we start condemning this kid for what they've done. Think about the sort of society that we have allowed to form that makes someone want to do this. Then stop with the keyboard bashing about your horror, get up, get out and do something to try and roll back such a divided society.
We won't see change with continued division, but we might just help if we try to learn from this. Hopefully like that famous tree repair and regrow.
