Without strategic foresight and radically rethinking the business model for news, a long-term strategy for growth will continue to be out of reach. Even for billionaires. For the past 20 years I’ve been meeting with news execs to talk about the need for a completely different approach for revenue and growth that doesn’t compromise the newsroom. But those execs, who often came from the newsroom, are utterly resistant to change. There are lots of alternatives to the current model. There are ways to simulate those models in advance of launching them. Ultimately, you need to unhook yourself from the idea that subscriptions, ads, paid content, licensing and live events are the only revenue streams possible.
