It's a big news day for the Arts in Australia. People far smarter than me will begin to give their analysis of the Government's new National Cultural Policy: Revive. If you've not had a look, check it out below. There's good news for First Nations Arts, Cultural Institutions, Music, Literature, Australian Content Quotas and some steps toward supporting infrastructure.
There were some interesting statements which will no doubt be teased out in the coming months...
"The arts cannot be left simply to those who can afford to do it" said the Prime Minister
"You touch our hearts and you are a $17 billion contributor to the economy." - it is Government after all so there is always that economic justification!
A reference to "project[ing] our culture to the world" and a determination that Australia be seen on the world stage culturally.
There was the earthy, impassioned speech from Minister for the Arts Tony Burke who undoubtedly feels like he delivered on his promise and in 7 months no less!
But as with every anticipated moment, there will of course be lots unhappy that there is no obvious support intended for their art form or their divine mission. The question remains, is it the miracle the arts have been waiting for? Or is it simply patching up a few major holes (sorry musos for ignoring you for so long) and relying on the Arts to lead a wider national identity shift?
I look forward to hearing the comments unfurl over the coming days and weeks as the sector digests our first major cultural policy in far too long.
