Multiple times in the year, us lecturers undergo this rite of passage, called paper setting and paper checking. As a Visiting Faculty in several colleges, I do this not just many times in the year, but for different kinds of students. Also, for different levels of students like UG Programs, PG Programs and Executive and Working Professionals. Because of autonomy of colleges and deemed universities, patterns are also different, and papers need to adhere to those standards. Throw in multiple sets that each college requires, with no duplication, it is a challenge that I enjoy tackling. Most people find paper checking monotonous, I, on the other hand, love it as much as teaching, as it gives me an insight into the students, in a very different way than I can get in the classroom. The Brightest, analyzing each concept, and challenging us through their answers, the ‘Hasn’t attended most lectures’ type – probably writing some totally unconnected answer, the Regurgitators, simply keen to just write pages and disappear, the Copiers, blindly copying, sometimes including spelling mistakes, but sometimes with very creative means of copying, the Quirky – I had a student write the BCG Matrix through pictures entirely, not just the quadrants, but the offered products and services too, not using words - very cute I found it, and so many more! Unlike traditional modes of assessment where a lot of importance was given to just the mid semester and semester exams, the parameters have changed to comprehensive evaluations throughout the semester which is given more weightage and the end semester exams match up to it, with equitable distribution of the curriculum, course outcomes, adherence to Blooms taxonomy (a common language that academia uses to assess Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation). Gone are the days of setting a paper where we asked questions like define XYZ and state the nature and characteristics. Our questions have to be outcome based, where we expect the student to demonstrate a practical understanding of the concepts taught in class and thus framed skillfully that will bring out exactly this. Tis that time of the year! In the Picture - almost 200 papers of 3 colleges, and there are few dozen more online - some colleges scan and upload so that we can check them from wherever! Do what you love, and love what you do!! I remain, an #educatorbyprofession and a #learnerforlife

A recent article on The Atlantic suggests that syllabi are dormant documents that are fizzling out in the Higher Education world. Author Ian Bogost writes, "If the syllabus had simply gone away, educators could mourn its loss and move on. Instead, the document persists as the bloated corpse of what it used to be, and also as a ghost haunting the distributed, corporate information systems that have slowly replaced it." Spooky, right? We want to hear your thoughts. What do you think of this observation? Do you see syllabi beginning to disappear? Should they disappear? Transform? Are we reaching the end of an era? Interesting article focusing on the issues arising from so called inclusive access schemes for textbooks in the USA and ultimately who benefits the most, students, colleges/universities or publishers. Personally for me the other big elephant in the room is for how much longer will textbooks remain viable & relevant & should Universities be transitioning to alternative pedagogical tools to educate their students?

Most institutions of higher education are getting back at it this week or next. I wanted to revisit Suzanne Donnelly's guest blog on the Course Materials Paradox. "And it turns out, students have enough other friction points in their academic and personal lives most of them don’t miss having to figure out multiple format and price point options and navigate multiple e-commerce and publisher sites just to be able to get started with their course materials." #InclusiveAccess #EquitableAccess #CourseMaterials #CourseMaterialsResearch #HigherEducation
