My own valedictory post🤩😁 Upon entering university in 2019, I received plenty of advice, but the one that has stuck with me is when a mentor said, “Jackie, four years is a substantial period. Stay relevant.”This counsel has been my guiding principle. However, I had to define what being relevant meant for me. I defined relevance as making impacts and being active. My active participation spanned from participating in class discussions, attending on-campus and off-campus programs, running for student leadership positions, and joining groups and clubs. Some of my friends stayed low-key and never spoke in class or joined any group. They didn’t want to be seen out of fear of being labeled as too showy. Some are genuinely introverted but I always say being introverted is no excuse to shelf yourself and deny yourself growth and experience. Participate in activities at your own pace or level. Just don’t stay dormant. Do something! There were times that out of fear of being labeled as too outspoken or showy, I went into my shells conforming to the majority. Looking back, every act of participation has yielded numerous benefits. My graduation message to those still in school is simple: be relevant, but define it on your terms. Don't spend four years in the university without contributing to the community, even in the classroom. Let the university community remember you in some way after you have left.

It's November, and you know what that means—it's 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉! 🎓 ✍️ This is a time for us to reflect on the incredible impact that scholarships have on students' lives and the broader higher education landscape. As advancement professionals at esteemed universities, we have the privilege and responsibility of shaping the future by providing opportunities to the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers. Here's how you can elevate your scholarship program to new heights: 💡 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: Discuss the importance of promoting diversity through scholarships, and strategies to ensure underrepresented groups have equal access to opportunities. 💡 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚-𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Emphasize the role of data in optimizing scholarship programs. Ask yourself "How can analytics help identify trends and improve the allocation of resources?". 💡 𝐀𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Explore ways to involve alumni in scholarship initiatives, from mentorship to funding, and the positive impact it can have on your institution. 💡 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬: Share ideas for simplifying and streamlining scholarship applications to make them more accessible and student-friendly. 💡 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: Address the importance of providing comprehensive support to scholarship recipients, including mentorship, career guidance, and networking opportunities. 💡 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: Highlight the need to establish KPIs for scholarship success and evaluate how your programs are transforming students' lives and the university community.

Less than 3 weeks away from launching our incredible LIVE online event, 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐡𝐃 𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 28, 𝐚𝐭 12:30𝐩𝐦 (till 2pm) 𝐀𝐄𝐒𝐓 or Melbourne time. Many of you probably think this is not for you, as you already know the things you need to know, and that might be true. Maybe you have information sessions at your university or research lab that teaches you insights into what it takes to do a thesis, get publications, how to write, statistics support, and more. But let me ask you this: How much are you DOING what you know? How much have you wished you were further along? How often do you question why you’re not doing what you know you should do? How many times do you think all the right things because you KNOW, but knuckling down to DO the work rarely happens or at least doesn’t get done to the extent you want? It’s frustrating. And I get it. What I’m going to teach you in this event will open up your mind to understanding why this is happening to so many of us. Our world is based on KNOWING things, on gathering information through books, teachings, lectures, exams and more. We know a lot. Yet, very little goes into teaching how to DO things, and what behaviours we need to cultivate to actually turn what we know into results. Trust me, this will be a learning experience that you’ll take with you for the rest of your career. Bring your peers. Bring your energy and an open mind. You’ll be part of a new wave of students, paving the way forward for empowered and fulfilled experiences in the PhD journey. 👉 𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐍𝐎𝐖 to secure a spot and full details: https://bit.ly/43arabe Grab an 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 THIS WEEK before they’re all gone. Alongside the ‘official’ post, here are a couple of personal reflections from me on putting yourself out there at conference events. I’m not a natural networker. Or rather, it’s not something I relish or think of as being in my comfort zone. Actually, like so much in life, the reality is rarely as bad as you fear in advance! But I’ve discovered there are some practical things you can do to make it easier… - Have an opening line ready for walking up to strangers. Today I opted for ‘Hi, I’m doing that embarrassing thing of walking up to strangers at conferences. Can I say hello?’ Most people were very happy to chat back. - Message a few people and break the ice in advance. There were a couple of people I knew had connections in common, so I messaged and told them I’d love to meet them. It then makes it easier - on both sides - to approach each other IRL. - If you’ve got a stand, people can be reticent if they think you’re going to pounce on them. Have something it’s easy for them to grab and take away. Or a game or survey that makes for an easy ice-breaker (we tried a Lego-based option, which actually made for a bit of a talking point 😂). I’m far from having this thing nailed though, so I’d love any other tips I can try out next time around!

I help companies improve morale and create a culture designed for success | Organizational and Leadership Psychology Doctoral Student
My last and final day of the Spring 2024 residency at William James College was yesterday. Instead of posting my pic on the day it was taken, I wanted to wait until today and allow time to reflect on the week. Here are my thoughts: First, I'm academically and professionally fulfilled and yet neurologically depleted. It was a jam-packed, intense week for us, full of in-depth learning experiences, challenges, thought provocation, and new skill applications. Also, I am more in love with the program than ever before. The road to a doctorate is difficult and just getting started for me, but these residencies serve as frank reminders of exactly why I'm putting myself through this learning gauntlet. I'm in love with Leadership and Org. Psych (as weird as that may sound). It's a mistress of the academic variety. Here are some micro-lessons I've learned over the last 4 days: 1. Nothing is as it seems. 2. Align with an organization's formal and informal influencers if you wish to make a change. 3. Things feel better when you're with like-minded people; you grow more when you're around non-like-minded people. 4. There's a neuroscience to people pleasing. 5. Self-care is more about developing resilience to manage stress than removing stress. 6. You can brag without being braggadocious. 7. Challenge your own thinking and where it comes from. 8. Ethical decisions are never as simple as right vs. wrong and can often be right vs. right or wrong vs. wrong. 9. My skills and experience transfer well into this field. 10. Workplaces need human skills to be taught to them now more than ever. Lastly, to my incredible cohort. This experience would be nothing without you all. I'm inspired, motivated, challenged, and amazed by you all. Thank you for putting up with my bad jokes for a week. To the incredible faculty and other students, thank you for paving the way for us and supporting each of us with all your heart. We feel the love and passion. #LeadershipDevelopment #UseOFself #WilliamJamesCollege #DoctoralStudent
