Before we get too far into April, we want to shout out our Women's Employee Resource Group (ERG) who took the lead throughout March to honor the incredible contributions of women in shaping both The RealReal and the world. As part of our initiatives, we were honored to host a groundbreaking conversation that resonated across our organization and beyond. Our Women's ERG Co-Chair and Principal Product Manager, Devon Novotnak, had the privilege of sitting down with Karen Katz, The RealReal's esteemed Chairperson of the Board and former CEO of Neiman Marcus, for a company-wide fire-side chat for our employees. Together, they delved into topics crucial to our collective progress: leadership, career advancement, and the ongoing journey towards gender equity and inclusion. Karen's insights, stemming from her remarkable career at the helm of one of the most iconic names in retail, provided invaluable guidance and inspiration. Her perspectives on navigating challenges, seizing opportunities, staying humble, and fostering an inclusive culture were both enlightening and empowering. This conversation exemplified our commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace where every voice is heard, valued, and empowered to thrive. Let's carry forward the momentum of these discussions and continue championing progress together.

In honor of Women’s History Month, women across Spencer Stuart are sharing what this year's theme, "Inspire Inclusion", means to them. Anne Schmitt, director of content based in our Chicago office, shared her thoughts: “The celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day spurs me to think about the progress women have made since I started my career, and the work left to do to make sure my two daughters and other young women entering the workforce can create the lives and careers they want. On the positive side, there are so many more visible role models today for women in leadership roles in all walks of life, including business. There are fewer assumptions made about women’s interests and ambitions. Collectively, we’re much more supportive of women — and men — balancing their home and work commitments. Still, there is work to do to increase opportunities for women, whether that’s increasing the pipeline of women to the very highest leadership positions, making sure women are at the table when business or social issues are being discussed and decided, or ensuring all parents in the workplace have the support they need to manage their competing demands. That’s why the ‘Inspire Inclusion’ message of International Women’s Day resonates with me. Each of us can contribute to creating a more inclusive world that empowers women, creates a real sense of belonging and provides opportunities for them to make the impact they want on the world.” #WomensHistoryMonth #InspireInclusion

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re dedicating the entire month of March on our socials to spotlighting the talented women who work within our global studios. Here’s what they had to say: 💬 From your perspective, how has the idea of leadership transformed, and in what ways do you believe women can play a role in reshaping and redefining leadership within the workplace? “Nowadays, I see more emphasis on leaders who are great at fostering collaboration within their team or who have the mindset of “leading from behind.” It’s possible this cultural shift is happening in part because women are holding more leadership positions in many different industries, and can shape the culture of organizations meaningfully. I think we’re getting better at recognizing the unique value of having different leadership styles and the people-oriented, relationship-building skills that are traditionally seen as feminine. I hope we will continue to see this shift as we build a more balanced society and move towards an equitable future for all.” -Emmanuelle Sainté, Senior Proposal Specialist, Toronto 💬 How has the architecture & design industry evolved in terms of gender diversity since you began your career, and what changes would you like to see in the future? “I started my design career 17 years ago and admittedly it’s still not a very gender diverse industry. Opposite of other typical industries, It’s still female-dominated. But, I am seeing more progression of males in the industry, which adds new perspective and energy. Another change I see is the younger generation being in more leadership roles rather than leaning toward the more well-seasoned, which allows for more diverse and progressive outlooks.” -Karen Wong, Director of Practice, CHIL, Vancouver 💬 What challenges have you faced as a woman in your industry, and how did you overcome them? In the male-dominated industry, women’s voice often get un-noticed, let along our presence. I’ve always had to get opinions valued more and be louder, especially with various consultants and GC workers. However, once you stick out your neck for yourself, everything flows from there, and respect and appreciation will be earned. -Ningyuan Cai, Interior Designer, Shanghai Read more about it:
