With Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowships closing on Monday 22 April, TRI has reached out to past recipients to hear about their success. TRI-based Professor Jyotsna Batra from QUT (Queensland University of Technology) (pictured) and Dr John Lee from The University of Queensland shared some of their tips: DO - keep it simple - think about your end-user so the research has a clear application - know what industry needs - approach industry partners and start the application early - identify research milestones clearly - justify your budget - be persistent (neither Prof Batra or Dr Lee secured a fellowship on their first attempt) - take on feedback and learn from your mistakes. DON'T - use jargon or be highly technical - leave it to the last minute - be too ambitious - be genetic or unfocused - neglect feedback. It is a great honour for me to have authored a new Times Higher Education whitepaper on academic interdisciplinarity, in collaboration with Schmidt Science Fellows. Released today, the whitepaper presents the findings of a 'challenge' to capture and evaluate the impact of interdisciplinary science research, using a variety of metrics and measures. https://lnkd.in/e6XXRFHR Building upon the fantastic feasibility work of my consultancy colleagues Mark Tweddle and Mei Mei Lim, as well the incredible data science leadership of Duncan Ross and Billy Wong and team, we show how a series of metrics can demonstrate universities' dedication, investment and impact in interdisciplinary science research. There are some key recommendations for the global HE sector in the report, providing some guidance on improving the infrastructures that lay behind impactful interdisciplinarity, as well encouraging greater participation from universities. The report also shows that universities in the Global South are really committed to interdisciplinary science research, which can support the solutions needed to combat their countries' most pressing needs. For me a key takeaway is not just encouraging greater interdisciplinarity, but encouraging interdisciplinary science collaboration across borders between the Global North and Global South.

The Innovative Research Universities supports the development and refinement of Australia’s draft National Science and Research Priorities and the National Science Statement. The draft Priorities cut across traditional discipline and sector boundaries, and effectively set out the “what” and “why” for Australia’s science and research efforts over the next decade. However, the Priorities are less clear regarding “how” they will be implemented, how they will engage with First Nations and interdisciplinary knowledge, and how they will complement the broader system of government support for research. The contribution of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), particularly towards enacting behavioural change, could be strengthened. The foundational role of the school and continuing education sectors could also be better emphasised. Read our response here: https://lnkd.in/gWhChirJ

2023 Rising Scholars Conference – Call for Abstracts The MIT Sloan School of Management PhD Program is proud to host the fourth annual Rising Scholars Conference . This event will gather diverse PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from across the country to present their research work and interact with faculty from MIT Sloan and other institutions. The conference will be held virtually on October 25 and October 26, 2023. The objectives of the conference are to help rising scholars gain research insights, valuable exposure, and faculty mentorship that will benefit them for years to come. We encourage participation from underrepresented and underserved groups, as well as from others whose backgrounds and experience would bring additional dimensions to the educational experience. We strongly believe in the value of diversity - broadly defined - in the pursuit of our educational mission. The Rising Scholars Conference originated at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2020 to support doctoral student and faculty diversity. PhD students and postdocs who are interested in presenting research at the conference are invited to submit abstracts for review. Abstracts are limited to one page in length and may be for works-in-progress or complete research papers. The deadline for submission is September 15, 2023.
