NEW PUBLICATION ALERT via 'Social Change', a journal of Sage : I ask the question: Why is contemporary United States foreign policy systemically hypocritical? This essay offers a legal realist perspective, which considers human rights and democracy-oriented narratives as morally appealing meta-discourses that are subject to reframing, weaponisation, and instrumentalisation by a wide variety of contending political actors in pursuit of concrete material or policy objectives. The perspective of legal realism is used in the case of post-Cold War United States foreign policy to understand how normative discourses are used across various geographies of geopolitical contestations in which state-initiated violence and death are prevalent. This commentary suggests that in pursuit of its geostrategic and economic objectives, the United States government’s human rights rhetoric abroad did not match the actual consequences of its domestic and foreign policies, thereby showing systemic hypocrisy. https://lnkd.in/epGwZfRt

Unveiling the Truth for a Sustainable Future: On International Day for the Right to Truth, I stand with all those who champion access to accurate and unbiased information, particularly in the face of human rights abuses. As a Sustainable Goodwill Ambassador, I believe truth is fundamental to achieving a healthy planet, a just society, and a world where human rights are respected. Why Truth Matters for Human Rights and Sustainability: Justice and Reconciliation: Uncovering the truth about human rights violations is crucial for achieving justice for victims, holding perpetrators accountable, and preventing future atrocities. This is critical for building a more peaceful and sustainable future. Empowering Survivors: Access to the truth empowers survivors of human rights abuses to heal, reclaim their dignity, and participate in rebuilding their communities. Preventing Repeat Offenses: Unearthing the truth about past human rights violations helps identify systemic problems and implement reforms to prevent similar abuses from happening again. This is crucial for a stable and sustainable society. The Fight for Truth Continues: The right to truth is often under threat, especially in the context of human rights violations. We must: Support Human Rights Defenders: Bravery of journalists, activists, and human rights defenders who risk their lives to uncover the truth must be recognized and supported. Combat Disinformation: Misinformation campaigns can be used to obfuscate human rights violations. Let's promote media literacy and critical thinking skills to combat these tactics. Promote International Cooperation: International collaboration is vital for investigating human rights violations and ensuring accountability. Together, we can build a future where truth is a cornerstone of a sustainable world, one that respects human rights and fosters peace. Let's celebrate those who courageously pursue truth and empower our communities to demand justice. I am happy to see that the United States and other global leaders reaffirm a shared belief that democracy is humanity’s most enduring means to advance peace, prosperity, equality, sustainable development, and security. I am truly concerned, however, about the apparent lack of understanding about the nature of democracy by world leaders, as evidenced by the fact that the word "local" or "state" --as in "state and local government" or "state and local democracy"-- is not mentioned a single time. Just as a reminder to the U.S. State Department: out of the 520,000 democratically elected officials in the United States, elected federal officials represents only 0.1% of the total, while elected state officials reflect 3.6%. By comparison, 96.3% of American democracy is local. If we want democracy around the world to advance peace, prosperity, equality, sustainable development, and security, we can--and must--do more to acknowledge and advance local governance and democracy. #localgovernment #localdemocracy #usaid #state
