The paper (preprint) below is the legacy paper of the inaugural #CrowdSafetySummit, a joint contribution of industry #profesisonals and #academics. We call for setting a #visionzero target in crowd safety (i.e., no deaths associated with crowd events) and discuss how that can potentially be achieved through implementation of the #swisscheese model of crowd safety. We discuss the layers of this model along with the challenges and barriers of its implementation, including the need for closer #stakeholder collaboration as a must for such implementation. I am delighted to note that in the few days since the release of the preprint, it has made it to the top 10 downloaded on SSRN. An article I penned for the Women in Engineering Sydney newsletter has now been posted on LinkedIn. It is a short piece about the career journey which has led me to the fantastic role I am in today!
Our publications coordinator, Deirdre O'Neill, the Group General Manager - Infrastructure Development & Delivery at Venues NSW, has penned an article that discusses how she has navigated her career journey, highlighting the key decisions and experiences that brought her to where she is today today. She hopes this can inspire our readers to open their eyes to the opportunities our profession can offer. #womeninengineering #engineersaustralia #careerpatheay #womeninstem #foodforthought Engineers Australia

This was a fascinating talk by Paul Morrell. The title of the talk was: "Why is change so difficult (and yet so necessary) in construction". As Al Simmonite says below, the content was rich and wide ranging. My two take away keywords were - Ethics and Duty - in the products we use, how we install them, how we look after the people designing and installing them, and finally, the relationship between these aspects and the regulatory framework, specifically enforcement of it. I ask myself "what is my duty as an educator to teach these aspects of the industry to the next generation?" I also noted the difference in the audience between project management and construction management, despite the significant overlap in practice. This is something that we can also see in the academic community through the journals we publish in and the conferences we attend. Lots to discuss! The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Major Projects Association Association for Project Management The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction UCL Jacqui Glass, Mustafa Selçuk Çıdık, Ph.D., SFHEA, Jing Xu
Absolute privilige this evening to be invited to attend the 2nd The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) James Wates lecture given by Paul Morrell (yes that is Ken Dodd on screen!) at the impressive The Royal College of Surgeons of England and to be there with our friend and colleague from The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction UCL, Dr Simon Addyman. Paul gave us a poignant, funny whisltestop masterclass in the issues, challenges and opportunities facing the building sector. Many takeaways, too many to list in one go. But .. culture is important but it isnt the answer in isolation was the "music to my ears" moment. Also, and it may sound an oxymoron to hear me agree with this but collaboration isn't the answer (by itself) either. Agree with Paul's challenges on how we drive the stagnant productivity but also have to commit and deliver ("know what we are going to do, do what we say we are going to do"). It was really interesting to see the lack of overlap in the audience from that at the recent Major Projects Association annual dinner, yet we operate and co-exist in the same space, although we also need to pull more variety into the Major Projects conversation in the Assocation, not just infra. #building #infrastrucutre #industry #leadership #change #welisten

We can fix the construction industry. But right now, it is deeply flawed... It relies on speed, efficiency, certainty, and profitability. And yet, it's rarely any of those things - it's often slow, ineffective, extremely wasteful, and costly. This often leads to frustration and strained relationships. We have all of the tools to solve these problems. We want to see more contractors get on board too. As a small and agile company we're doing our best to test and implement technology to support our goal for global garden domination! In Landscape Middle East Magazine this month we talk about using Notion, Stripe, and other tools to speed up and simplify lives for our clients. Technology and landscape do belong together, (just not AI designed ones... yet). The quest continues for great gardens, made better. #constructionindustry #contractors #middleeast #landscapeconstruction #automation #wildendesign #notion #stripe #landscapearchitecture #construction

During a recent training session I led, a fundamental question was asked: "What are 'commons'?" Surprisingly, the responses revealed a lack of basic understanding of this vital concept. This observation has inspired me to start a three-part series of articles aimed at sharing the essence of commons, their significance, and why we must preserve them. Join me in this journey as we delve into the essence of commons and explore why safeguarding them is needed for the well-being of our communities and the planet as a whole. Stay tuned for the upcoming articles in this series. #commons #communitywellbeing #sustainability

Stories from the Field: Christopher Galvez Towards better things: A journey from a tourist to an Assistant Quality Manager in Singapore, watch Christopher Galvez share more about the things he looks forward to on site, his goals, and how he keeps the romance alive with his wife. This video is part of Novade’s Stories from the Field series. We see construction workers build every day, not realising that even the most ordinary of people on the ground have the greatest and extraordinary stories to tell. It’s time to uncover these stories and make deeper connections. https://lnkd.in/gKFfZmMX

It has been both fun and enriching for me. Sometimes you just need a good chat to find the energy to keep climbing the long slog of public service transformation! Thanks Kara Kane, Paloma Jain and Martin Jordan for setting this up, and thanks again Ülly Enn and Laurence Berry for your thoughts and examples. #egov #design
Public service transformation is very hard. It takes enormous resilience, stamina and persistence from the people doing this hard work. It’s a topic of focus for Kara Kane and me this year. At the Creative Bureaucracy Festival in June, Kara moderated a brilliant open panel discussion with Laurence Berry 🇬🇧, Marco Maria Pedrazzo 🇮🇹, Ülly Enn 🇪🇪 and several active participants. The panellists discussed how we can keep creatives motivated in public service roles, how to help build resilience for change, and how to recruit and retain talent for this type of work. Paloma Jain took extended notes, which we will publish in a blog post shortly. Kara and I will dive deeper into the topic in the coming weeks and talk about it at service design conferences in Edinburgh and Berlin in autumn. You can find the recording of the conversation from June on YouTube now: https://lnkd.in/ew7VNYjh
