The trouble with media auditing pools - if they get too deep you just might drown... All too often opaque media auditor pools are seen as the pinnacle of agency delivery measurement, often written into contracts and governing agency bonus schemes. Those of us who work in advertising, especially the media part of the business, would have some sense on how utterly time-consuming and painful new account transitions can be. The huge high on the business win gets a reality-check with process, staffing, approvals and paperwork with incumbents and agency bodies often taking up more time and energy than teams planned for. At Starcom we recently on-boarded the digital-first brands from one of the world’s most respected advertisers and took our inaugural campaigns on air on July 1st. It was one of the smoother transitions I have been part of, thanks to a very supportive client and a superb, energetic team at Starcom and Publicis Media Five top tips on new business transitions, because winning is great but making it work and retaining it is even better✨✨ * Create a transition team with representatives across internal agency functions, especially including finance * If you have the luxury, get your account lead in place asap. Enable him or her to orchestrate the transition with a seamless escalation matrix * Co-create templates with the client, fill them and look at them everyday. There are hundreds of things that need to be tracked and these formats help all stakeholders stay on course * Have a bad-cop on the team, someone who is always thinking of the worst case scenario and everything that can go wrong. You’ll hate this person but will also thank them later :) * Be honest with your client. There are some expectations you know you won’t meet. Say this early on, not on day zero. Traditional media auditing, with its focus on "old world" KPIs, often misses the mark in today's dynamic environment. It emphasizes inputs over outcomes, relying on methodologies like pooling—which, frankly, has become irrelevant. Pooling aggregates costs across a spectrum of advertisers without transparency or actionable insights, ultimately failing to foster the trust that is crucial between advertisers and agencies. I recently had a conversation with PJ Leary where we discussed the necessity for a shift to more transparent, outcome-focused strategies that ID Comms champions through our ValueTrack program. Our approach aims to set clear, realistic performance targets based on the advertiser's own data, sidestepping the opacity of pooling for a direct line of sight to what's achievable. The core of our discussion highlighted not just a need to move away from lowest-cost metrics but to balance cost with quality—ensuring media investments are both efficient and effective.
