Finally, at the 2002 Brazilian Grand Prix, #Ferrari decides to race with the new #F2002. 🏎 Its debut was delayed due to reliability problems but, after the Malaysian Grand Prix - which saw #Williams considerably improving its performance - this choice was necessary. However, only Michael Schumacher will race with the new car. His teammate Rubens Barrichello will have an upgraded version of the #F2001. Qualifying does not go as expected: Schumacher is second while Barrichello is eighth. Overall, Michelin tyres prevails over Bridgestone tyres as 7 drivers out of 10 are equipped by the French tyre manufacturer. In the race, however, Ferrari proves once again to have the best car. Schumacher wins the race ahead of his brother with Williams. A shame for Barrichello, who did not finish the race due to hydraulic problems; anyway, until that point, he was leading the race after an incredible comeback. Today marks the day, 30 years ago, that Ayrton Senna was tragically killed. Three decades after his death at Imola, the great Brazilian driver remains a revered but controversial figure in motorsport. From this list, here’s my fave race featuring him … 4. The Ayrton Senna legend is born: Monaco Grand Prix 1984 … “It will be really a tragic result for Senna. However, while he’s not about to be world champion this year, he will undoubtedly be world champion in the future if his career continues.” Thus spoke BBC commentator and 1976 world champion James Hunt, having witnessed one of the great wet weather performances of all time. Senna, behind the wheel of a decidedly mid-to-back-of-the-field Toleman, had made his way to second place by Lap 19 of the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, as drivers of the calibre of Niki Lauda and Nigel Mansell were spinning off all around him. UNDERDOG TALES: When Senna took the F1 paddock by storm with Toleman and made Monaco’s streets his own Between Lap 27 and Lap 31 – the last lap before race official Jacky Ickx (ironically a notorious regenmeister himself) controversially threw the red flag to stop proceedings – Senna had gained on race leader Alain Prost by an average of 3.7 seconds a lap, passing him for the lead across what became the finish line on Lap 32 but falling back to second in the final countback. Was he robbed? It’s a question that can still excite F1 fans down the pub today. The 2002 Italian Grand Prix sees the seventh 1-2 of the season for Ferrari. After another pole position of Juan Pablo Montoya on Saturday, Rubens Barrichello wins the race on Sunday, followed by teammate Michael Schumacher. 💡 For this race, Scuderia Ferrari calculated everything to the millimetre. They put the drivers on two different strategies and prepared a particular setup, with less aerodynamic load to be able to overtake their rivals. 70 years ago Nigel Mansell, 1992 Formula 1 world champion, was born. To celebrate his 70th birthday, let's go back to the 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix. Nigel Mansell, on his debut with Scuderia Ferrari, won the race undisturbed – he was the first driver since Mario Andretti in 1971 to win on his debut with the Maranello team – ahead of Alain Prost on McLaren and Mauricio Gugelmin on March, the latter on his first career podium.
