Surfing has always been a huge passion of mine, and I was catching waves from a young age. I had my accident while I was living in Morocco and working at a surf camp - I was in the water multiple times a day and it was such a big part of my life. Beaches and wheelchairs are a tough combination though, and after my accident I thought I'd never want to get in the sea again. But I missed it a lot, and couldn't turn down the opportunity to try adaptive surfing again a few years ago. Even though it was different to how I surfed before, I loved it, and wanted to get better at it. When I moved to North Devon during the pandemic I was able to start surfing more regularly and it's become really big part of my life again. Last year I joined Surfing England's Inclusive Line Ups panel, which is aiming to make accessing the sea and surfing more inclusive to different groups. I am also currently part of Team England Adaptive, and we placed 4th in the world at the World Champs in California last November. And now, even more excitingly, Surfing England have hired someone as an Adaptive Pathways Manager to create and drive a strategy to develop talent in para surfing. This work is led by my good friend, surf coach and travel buddy Jack Patching and they have just launched a roadshow of taster sessions that will be held around England this summer. These free taster sessions are an amazing opportunity for people to try adaptive surfing with some of the most experienced instructors and coaches in the country in a safe and fun environment. Please spread the word about this roadshow with anyone who might be interested - surfing is an incredible sport that has had such a huge impact on my life and I would love to see more people come along and enjoy it! We’re already signed up! My son has been learning with Adsurf, a brilliant adaptive surfing charity in Bude for some time now. He absolutely loves it and it has given him so much confidence - his instructor Cyril, who is fantastic, told us all about it last week. We are really looking forward to it and your story makes it even more so. And congratulations on your World Champs result too, that’s amazing!
