One of the biggest risks of working in design immature environments is that the quality of your portfolio is dragged down by your stakeholders. I've seen far too many designers and hv personally faced, whose case studies didn't have the requisite process, depth and logic that hiring managers are looking for. - No research or testing to mitigate risks - Rushed and half-baked features - Zero strategic planning or logic - No KPIs/OKRs or metrics of any kind - Feature flops post launch - Quickly abandoned and never iterated on - No design discussions - No design process followed There was no reason the feature should have existed beyond "the CEO or PM had a random bad idea and refused to budge.” So why do many design hiring managers in positions of power have unrealistic expectations of other designers when we know full well just how challenging and immature the vast majority of organizations are? Saying "I worked with a stubborn, toxic, racist, and/or incompetent PM or CEO“ is not socially acceptable during interviews, nor is blaming others. Yet this is a frequent enough phenomenon that almost every senior designer has experienced this in their career. Many designers’ only sin was that they did not do a good job vetting their new environment or did not have the luxury of choice due to obligations and circumstances beyond their control. This puts an inordinate amount of pressure on designers to take on the work of others and single handedly pay off the debt incurred by the organization's refusal to properly fund or vet adjacent functions. The thankless result of burning the candle on both ends is inevitably burnout. An equally unsavory shortcut is to “embellish" case studies by redoing designs or stretching the truth of how things were built. It's likely more prevalent than many would care to admit. Design doesn't exist in a vacuum and designers are not an island apart. It's unfortunate that the trajectory of a designer's career is heavily dependent on luck and one’s ability to effectively vet the environment prior to joining. And not just this there could also be a lot solutions to it like engaging by themselves in researching and suggesting the best thing but still there are a lot punch backs to this as well and the efforts made over this. ✨ What to consider when hiring a designer for your team ✨ It should go without saying, but make sure that there is actually a somewhat enticing and attractive opportunity there in the first place. There is nothing more frustrating than being presented with or reading a job description that's about as appealing as being a professional toothpaste squeezer. Then think about and detail WHY someone would want to work for your company. From speaking to designers, I would say these are five key things they commonly look for that companies need to consider with their offerings. 🕊 Creative Freedom and Impact: Designers often look for roles that allow them to express their creativity whilst contributing meaningfully to projects. Are you offering an opportunity where someone can make a tangible impact and see their designs come to life? 🕊 A Collaborative and Inclusive Culture: A positive and collaborative work culture is crucial and designers appreciate environments where they can collaborate with cross-functional teams. 🕊 Learning and Growth Opportunities: People are often motivated by a desire for continuous learning and professional growth. Does your role provide opportunities for development and a clear and attractive path for career progression? 🕊 Alignment with Company Values and Mission: Designers are more likely to thrive in organisations whose values and mission align with their own and look for roles where they contribute to projects that have a positive impact. 🕊 Work-Life Balance and Flexibility: Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for everyone and roles that offer flexibility in terms of work hours or remote work options are appealing. For those of you that know me, you’ll know that Design means more to me than just the sector I recruit for. It’s been an industry I’ve had a passion for, long before I even knew what recruitment was. There was never any doubt I’d work in the design space, the only question was how. Over the years the plans changed a few times. Architecture, Automotive Design, Advertising, Engineering, Product Design. I even had my first stab at business ownership with a design consultancy. But my path lead me to design recruitment. I fell in love with the fact I was working with so many creative people, exposure to so much awesome work and impacting design in organisations for the better.
