The use of natural and other green infrastructure techniques, including living shorelines, beach nourishment, forested buffers, bay islands and tidal wetlands, is a move away from the use of more traditional structural shore protection practices such as groins, breakwaters, seawalls and bulkheads. Natural solutions such as these can dampen and absorb wave energy and attenuate coastal flood waters, increasing the resiliency of a coastal community while also offering valuable ecosystem benefits, such as nursery grounds and habitat for near shore species. It’s a win-win solution for coastal communities as well as the Bay. #BayAwarenessWeek #lawyers4thebay https://lnkd.in/e5fAhZWE

PREPARE FOR BUSHFIRES 🔥 // Did you know that #FirstNations communities have been using their traditional cultural burning techniques for thousands of years to manage land and prevent catastrophic bushfires? These are just one of the many ways you can protect your family and property during the bushfire season. Cultural burning involves controlled, low-intensity fires that reduce fuel loads, promote biodiversity, and safeguard communities. By adopting this approach, we can create fire-resistant landscapes and decrease the severity of future bushfire events. 🌱 There are exemptions under vegetation legislation to allow land managers to mitigate their risks through clearing and controlled burns (when conditions allow). Learn more about how you can protect your property: 👇 https://hubs.li/Q0287dQd0 Department of Resources (Queensland)offices are open for the public to inquire about how best to protect and manage their property; including understanding exemptions for bushfires and other disasters. If you would like to learn more about Cultural Burning practices, Fire Lore is an excellent resource for land managers to reach out to! 👇 https://hubs.li/Q0287gFY0 Learn how the Suduk's managed bushfires and invasive weeds by adopting Cultural Burning techniques on their property south of #Warwick: 👇 https://hubs.li/Q0287j000 #CulturalBurning #ResilientCommunities #BushfirePrevention #Bushfire #LandManagement

On heavily forested properties, tree spacing is vital to preventing wildfires from jumping from tree to tree-- rapidly destroying entire forests and spreading to other properties. This photo, from SCC's tour of Cascadia Conservation District last week, is a beautiful example of a property where private landowners worked with the district and other partners to space out trees on their land. They also used controlled burns in prescribed burning areas to reduce fuel (dry brush, grasses, etc.) that causes wildfires to accelerate. If you live on a property with lots of trees, contact your local conservation district to find out how you can become #firewise. Learn more about fire safety at https://bit.ly/30c4ppl.
