There will be numerous secondary losses and changes in this transition. When a hospice employee heard me talk about the life transition of widowhood taking about SEVEN YEARS, she brought it to their board--- all were in disbelief EXCEPT THE WIDOW at the table. Instead of reducing motherhood to an idea, it’s time to view motherhood as a relationship, not a role. A role is scripted and preplanned. It is a part that you play. A relationship requires you to be your authentic self. It takes into account the complexities of every woman and family. Instead of buying into unattainable standards of being a good mother, let’s redefine good mothering as the quality of the connection between a mother and a child. What children need most is connection, not a perfect mother. Women are multi-dimensional human beings who have the potential to excel in every area of life. Motherhood is only one area. We need to stop listening to external sources telling us what it takes to be a good mother. Motherhood is about relationships. Every woman is different, unique and valuable—mother or not. Let women be individuals, not roles. I was reminded today by Jaqueline O. that March is Women's History Month, where we celebrate all those who made history by dedicating their lives to a cause greater than themselves. Many of these women we celebrate were also mothers. Which brings me to the point that we need far more support and protection then our system or our employers provide today if the unexpected happens. You might be surprised to know that over 2 million working parents have a severely disabled or critically ill child at home today. The impact on these families, especially mothers, is profound. - 53 hours per week spent on caregiving, sometimes permanently - 73% have at least one parent who quits or reduces hours – usually mom - 54% live under serious financial strain - Nearly 5 times more likely for a single parent to be a mother - 50% less likely for mothers to become or continue to be executives - 70% higher rate of divorce within first 5 years of diagnosis We need a safety-net so every woman, who is also a mother, can achieve their full potential to make history -- with the time, flexibility, and financial security to devote to themselves, their careers, and their family when they need it most. The daughters of widowed moms are supported at #WEE2023 Widow Empowerment Event in St. Louis this weekend. Their voices are important and needed to change the societal trajectory of underserving and neglecting #widows worldwide. They see how voiceless, invisible, and forgotten their moms are in social support, places of worship, faith based initiatives, governments and their experience of being stigmatized and socially excluded. They want to help change the perception and myths vs. realities by speaking up about how courageous their mothers are every day. They want to comfort their #moms and let them know they are healing, but differently than them. They have asked for a daughters panel at #WEE2024, and we would welcome this idea. Daughters are the next Gen widows, the statistics show this, 7 out of every 10 married women becomes a widow. It’s getting younger (average US age 59) due to #suicide and #addiction deaths. Including them in the solutions for their solo parent moms creates generational impact, higher women’s health and family sufficiency and sustainability. Holistic, whole family support. Generation to generation. Expect to hear more from the daughters at MWC.
