"The 'Fun' Dilemma: Young Workers' Perspective" Millennials and Gen Z workers hate their employers' attempts to create a 'fun' environment in the workplace. They say it shows a lack of understanding of the things that matter to young employees. In an attempt to encourage employees back into the workplace after the disruption caused by #COVID-19, many employers are introducing 'fun' events to encourage team building and a sense of community in the workplace. In fact, it is having the opposite effect. If #employees attend the events, it is often only done to keep their bosses happy. Most would prefer to be allowed to get on with their jobs in the middle of the day and not participate in games. They think their bosses should understand how busy they are and should not force them to play interactive games with their coworkers. Many employees do not want to develop #social relationships with their colleagues. They do not believe that employers are enabling them to develop a better work-life balance and instead are highlighting the cultural divide between the age #groups. Perhaps, instead of imposing what they think are exercises in team-building, employers should be asking their staff what they want. Organizing social and cultural events after work is not very popular. Most younger staff just want to be able to log off at 5 p.m. and stop thinking about work by going out with their friends or spending time with their families.

👩💻 With terms such as “#quietquitting and "lazy girl jobs” trending online, it’s essential for business leaders to reflect on their identity and values. Williamson anticipates that the workspace landscape will be characterized by a shift toward “more holistic work environments,” acknowledging a shortage of workers and an increasingly diverse workforce. Today, I was reading about "The End of Workplace Loyalty". I think the whole debate about #remote work vs RTO or #hybrid is a much deeper issue about the overall #trust, #respect, and #loyalty in the professional world. I think the return to work feud has just highlighted the predominant culture of: "You're only here because I need someone to do all the work we have." and "I'm only here because you pay me." Businesses that embrace #remote work don't just do it for the #productivity and the reduced office expenses. It's about trust and supporting each other as people to live and work where you want to. https://lnkd.in/g3raFi-D #remotework #culturematters #culture

I was talking with a client just yesterday about managing an employee who's in her early 20s. It's her first corporate job, and she's part of the "remote generation" who hasn't had as much in-person time the last few years. This piece really helps you understand how stressful--because so different--in-person work can be for a young person. Great read for anyone with young employees in the workplace (and for those young employees too)! #communication #remote #workplaceculture #stress #genz #generations

Humans are social animals, and we justify our worth by the work we do. That said, many employers say a large proportion of Generation Z are increasingly viewing work as an inherent negative. A study by Robert Walters suggested that Gen Z'ers entering the workplace work better with devices than people. Associate director Janine Blacksley said many have entered the workplace “remotely or in a hybrid manner” so social skills have taken a hit. Liz Villani, founder of BeYourselfAtWork said: “There's an air of entitlement in the workforce at the moment…Workplace friendships are less common than before, productivity is lower and…sickness leave is at an all-time high. These are all symptoms of a culture that views work as a negative thing. We need to reverse these trends to help our businesses grow, for teams to become more closely tied, and more importantly so that people can strive to enjoy what they do for most of their waking hours.”
